Francis Etheridge Biography and Civil War Narrative

Francis Etheridge was born in St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York, on July 20 (or 27), 1842. He was the 5th child and 3rd son of Dr. Francis B. and Fanny (Easton) Etheridge, who had a total of seven children.

By the time of the 1860 U.S. Census, 18-year-old Francis was living in Hastings, Dakota County, Minnesota, with his family and working as a laborer. His brother Charles was a 27-year-old Master Carpenter, sister Emmie was a 24-year-old Teacher of Music, brothers Locke (22) and James (16) were students, and sister Sarah (20) was a Teacher.

On March 24, 1862, the day his father Dr. Francis B. Etheridge was mustered in as Surgeon for the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment 20-year-old Francis was mustered in to work along side his father as a Hospital Steward. Dr. Etheridge's service as regimental Surgeon lasted less than six months, as he resigned on September 3, and was replaced by Dr. Vincent P. Kennedy. The younger Etheridge was mustered out in October 1862; his position of Hospital Steward was filled by N. J. Burns, promoted from Company I.

On March 17, 1865, in St. Johnsville, New York, 23-year-old Francis married Anna E. Wilson, born September 1846, in New York. Francis and Anna had six or seven children, including
son Francis (b. March 1866, d. October 1869, probaby in New York), son Locke Charles (b. April 1868, New York), son Lyman J. (b. June 1870 probably in New York, d. December 1873 possibly in New York), daughter Sarah (b. May 1873 in New York, d. August 1881, probably in Chicago, Illinois), daughter Emma C. (b. May 24, 1883, Illinois--probably Chicago), and son William Swan (b. April 16 or 23, 1890, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois).

At the time of the 1870 U.S. Census 28-year-old Frank lived in Rome, Oneida County, New York with his wife, Anna (Wilson) and his son, Locke (age 2), where he worked as a traveling agent. In 1880, 39-year-old Francis worked as a Grocer in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Living with him were his wife Anna (age 33), his son Locke (age 12, at school), and his daughter Sarah (age 5, at home). In 1900, Francis (age 56) and Annie (age 53) lived in Hyde Park Township, Cook County, Illinois along with two of their children: Emma (age 17) and William (age 10). Francis worked in the Insurance business. Son Locke may have also been living in Hyde Park Township, listed in the census as Charles L. Etheridge.

On July 23, 1901, Francis Etheridge died in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, at the age of 59. His wife Anna died about 16 years later on May 24, 1917, also in Chicago, at the age of 70.
