Henry Gregg Biography and Civil War Narrative

Henry Gregg was born about 1822 and enlisted in Company A of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Regiment when he was age 39. As a member of Company A, he fought in several early engagements in which the 5th Minnesota participated in 1862, including Farmington, Mississippi (May 28); Iuka, Mississippi (September 19); and Corinth, Mississippi (October 4).

On Monday, May 11, 1863, as the 5th Minnesota was in the vicinity of Jackson and Vicksburg, Mississippi, the following report was sent to the New York Times and later published:

SECOND DISPATCH
JACKSON, Monday, May 11
The enemy are fortifying at Rocky Springs and Wester Springs. Gen. OSTERHAUS is at Cayuga, with a hundred and fifty cavalry and six or seven regiments of infantry. The enemy are reinforcing at Willow Springs and Rocky Springs, from the river.
GRANT will probably advance east, and not direct to Vicksburgh.

On that same day at Rocky Springs, Mississippi, Henry M. Gregg deserted his company, his regiment, and the Union Army.
