Hans N. Jordt Biography and Civil War Narrative

Hans Nicolai Jordt was born in Kalleby, Schleswig-Holstein, Prussia (Germany) on January 18, 1831. Kalleby is located near the Baltic Sea, about 10 miles (25 kilometers) east of Flensburg. His parents were Asmus Hansen and Maria Dorothea (Lorenzen) Jordt, who also had a daughter, Christina Margaretha Magdalena Jordt (born September 12, 1928) and another son, Jacob Jordt (born November 7, 1834).

Hans Jordt enlisted in Company A of the 5th Minnesota on December 19, 1861, as a Private. On February 13, 1864, Hans re-enlisted as a veteran. He was promoted to Corporal. At the Battle of Nashville on December 15 & 16, 1864, Corporal Hans Jordt was wounded in the "right knee, slightly." He was promoted to Sergeant, and on September 6, 1865, he was mustered out with the Regiment.

Hans married Sarah Elizabeth Lake, born August 27, 1835 in St. Lawrence, New York, on July 21, 1867. The 1880 U.S. Census shows Hans and Sarah living in Cherry Grove, Goodhue County, with two daughters: Alma L. (age 8, born in Minnesota) and Wmma (Emma?) L. (age 1, born in Minnesota).

Hans Nicolai Jordt may have died November 17, 1925, in Goodhue County, Minnesota, being buried in Pine Island Cemetery, Pine Island, Goodhue County, Minnesota.
