Leonard Lenzen in the Civil War

Leonard Lenzen served in Company E of the 5th Minnesota toward the end of the war, joining the Company on September 3, 1864, and being discharged for disability on April 5, 1865.

Leonard was born in Germany in 1825. He emigrated to America and moved to Hennepin county, Minnesota, in 1856, settling in present day Medina in the western part of the county. In 1861 Lenzen built a mill on Elm Creek. He also set up a post office in the name of Lenz. The name Lenz was attached to the area for a brief time, but when the William Hamel family gave land to the railroad for a train depot in 1884, they requested that it be called "Hamel," which caught on.

Leonard married Susanna Raskopp on December 7, 1857, at Assumption Church, St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. Together they had 10 children, including Peter (born October 8, 1861), Leo (born November 29, 1866), Clara (born August 12, 1874), and Caroline. Leonard and Susanna moved to Mooreton, Richland County, North Dakota, where they lived the rest of their lives. Leonard died on November 2, 1884, and is buried in
St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, located in Section 12 of Barney Township, Richland County, North Dakota. Susanna died on December 14, 1908.
