William H. Leonard Biography and Civil War Narrative

William Huntington Leonard was born in December 1826 in Tolland County, Connecticut. He attended high school in Connecticut, took one course at the New York State University, and then graduated from the Yale Medical School, session of 1852-1853. He moved to Wyoming County, New York, where he began his medical practice.

In October 1853 William married Miss Jane Preston of Connecticut. In 1855 they moved to Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, continuing his medical practice. At that time he was the youngest practitioner in the city of Minneapolis (age 28).

Leonard entered the the Fifth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment as Assistant Surgeon on November 22, 1862. On May 23, 1865, after Dr. Vincent P. Kennedy concluded his term of service as Surgeon and was mustered out, Dr. Leonard was promoted to Surgeon. After being mustered out with the regiment on September 6, 1865, he resumed his practice as a physician.

William H. Leonard was health officer of the first board organized in Minneapolis. William and Jane had two children, William E. (also a physician) and Gertrude.

William died in 1907 at about age 80.
