Mathias Logelin Biography

Mathias Logelin was born Alexander Modeste Logelin, the son of Baussant Logelin and Jeanne Huguin, on January 21, 1844 in Hannonville, France. At age nine in 1853, he moved to the United States along with his parents and older brother, Nicolas Felix. By the time the family left France, three other siblings born in the family had died.

Mathias served in Company E during its early involvement in the Civil War, from the battle of Farmington, Mississippi, on May 28, 1862, until he was wounded in the lower jaw in the battle of Corinth on October 4, 1862. He was discharged for disability.

Mathias married  Magdalin ("Lena, Helena") Affolter about November 1867 probably in or near Chaska, Carver County, Minnesota. In 1880 he lived in Chaska, where his household consisted of himself (age 35), his wife, Lena (age 30), and children Edward (age 11), Lucie (age 10), Frederick (age 8), Joseph (age 7), Ida (age 6), Alex (age 5), Frank (age 3), and Saraphine (age 6 months). Mathias was a County Officer in 1880. Lena Logelin was born September 15, 1850, in Switzerland, and all of their children were born in Minnesota. Lena died on January (or June?) 13, 1887; Mathias died on  November 15, 1932, in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Mathias and Lena's daughter, Saraphine, was born December 28, 1879 in Chaska, Carver County, Minnesota, and died December 23, 1957. On September 29, 1901, Saraphine married Arthur Luman Cowles in Scambler Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Arthur was born on December 18, 1875, in Pelican Rapids, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. He died on February 3, 1961.
