Martin Lorch Biography and Civil War Narrative

Martin Lorch was born about 1824 in Wurttemberg (Germany). He enlisted in the 5th Minnesota Regiment on August 13, 1864, and was mustered in on September 3. After serving in the final months of the Civil War, Private Lorch was mustered out with his regiment on September 6, 1865.

At the time of the 1870 U.S. Census, Martin Lorch is listed as a 48-year-old Farmer living in Hollywood Township, Carver County, Minnesota. About 1873, "John Martin Lorch" married Caroline Richter.

In the 1890 Census of Veterans, "John M. Lorch" of Company E, 5th Minnesota Regiment, is listed as a resident of Winsted, McLeod County, Minnesota. His "Disability Incurred" is listed as dyspepsia (indigestion). According to the Minnesota Veterans Grave Registration Index, Martin Lorch died October 25, 1892, and was buried in McLeod County.
