Henry Neustel in the Civil War

Henry Neustel served as a member of the Fifth Minnesota, Company E, during the final year of the Civil War. He was 38 years old and a husband and father when he enlisted.

Born in Wuertemberg on May 1, 1826, Heinrich married Christina Lettenmaier while still in Germany. Their son Henry was also born there on October 9, 1857, and they migrated to Minnesota in 1858. Henry farmed in the area of Waconia, Carver County, Minnesota. The rest of their children were born in Minnesota.

In 1870, the Henry Neustel household consisted of Henry (age 44), Christina (age 41), Henry (age 13), Frederick (age 11), Wilhelm (age 10, Rosina (age 7), John (age 5), (age 3), and Conrad (age 3 months)

At the time of the 1880 census, Henry and Christina had 9 children living at home: Henry (age 22), Frederick (age 21), William (age 19), Rosina (age 17), John (age 15), Sophia (age 13), Conrad (age 10), Catherina (age 8), and Herman (age 3). The 1880 Carver County Plat Map shows "Henry Neussler" owning property in Section 33 of Waconia Township.

Henry died at age 70 on August 18, 1896. He was buried next to his son Henry (who had died February 16, 1881) in Cologne United Methodist Cemetery, Benton Township (one mile south of Cologne) Carver County, Minnesota. After Henry's death Christina Neustel lived with their son William in Waconia Township at the time of the 1900 Census. In January 1904, Christina (June 27, 1829 - January 7, 1904) was buried next to Henry.
