Frederick Scheuble Biography and Civil War Narrative

Frederick (or Friedrich) Scheuble was born March 3, 1830, in Baden (Germany). In 1853, Fred immigrated to America and settled in Minnesota after spending some time in Wisconsin.

By the time of the 1860 U.S. Census, 30-year-old Fred resided and farmed in Waconia Township, Carver County, Minnesota, living with his family: wife Catharina (age 25, born in Baden), daughter Catharina (age 4, born in Wisconsin), and daughter Mina (age 1, born in Minnesota).

Fred enlisted as a Private in Company E of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment on February 28, 1862, just before his 32nd birthday.
During "Fritz" Scheuble's term of service, Company E participated in the Siege of Corinth, Mississippi (May 26-30, 1862), the Battle of Corinth (October 3-4, 1862), Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign (November 1862 to January 1863), and the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi (May 18-July 4, 1863), the Meridian Campaign (February 3-March 2, 1864), the Red River Campaign (March 10-May 22, 1864), the Battle of Pleasant Hill (April 9, 1864), action at Old River Lake (June 6, 1864), an exhaustive march through Arkansas and Missouri in pursuit of Confederate General Price (September 17-November 15, 1864), and the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee (December 15-16, 1864). At some point in his service, Scheuble was promoted to Corporal. He was mustered out in March 1865, just as the Civil War neared its end.

The 1870 census shows "Fritz Seibele" living and farming in Waconia Township, Carver County, Minnesota. With him are his wife Catharina, daughter Catharina (age 14), daughter Wilhelmina (age 11), son Fritz (age 8), daughter Anna (age 4), and daughter Josephine (age 2). Fred's wife Catharina died not long after the 1870 census, so Fred sent to Germany for her sister, Mary.

About 1872-1873, Fred married Mary
(born June 1837). At the time of the 1880 U.S. Census, Frederick Scheuble lived with his family in Waconia, Carver County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Frederick (age 50, farmer), his wife Maria (age 42, occupation: keeping house), son Fritz (age 17, helps on farm), daughter Ann (age 14, helps at house), daughter Josephine (age 12, at school), daughter Mary (age 4), son George (age 2), daughter Catherina (age 1), and son William (age 4 months, born in February). The 1880 plat map shows F. Scheuble owning 60 acres at the northwest corner of section 15, Waconia Township, Carver County, Minnesota. Nearby neighbors included J. Lohrke (to the west), J. Lindner (to the southwest), John Fahse (to the south), August Vahl (to the north), and George Bauernschmidt (to the east).

In 1900, the Fred Scheuble household consisted of 70-year-old Fred (still farming), 62-year-old wife Mary, 24-year-old daughter Mary (born October 1875), 22-year-old son George (born July 1877), 19-year-old son Charles (born October 1881), and 7-year-old daughter Lydia (born May 1893). Son Fred (born July 1862, while his father, Fred, was serving in the 5th Minnesota) lived nearby.

Friederich Scheuble died February 18, 1909, in Carver County, Minnesota. He was buried in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Waconia, Carver County, Minnesota. Mary Scheuble died in Carver County, Minnesota, on September 14, 1932, and was also buried at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Waconia.
