Julius enlisted in Company D of the 5th Minnesota Regiment on September 3, 1864, as a Private. He served during the final year of the Civil War and was mustered out with the company on September 6, 1865.

Five years later, in June 1870, Julius married Catharine (Katherina) Ehlers. Catharine was born August 2, 1851.
