George Siringer Biography and Civil War Narrative

Georg L. Siringer was born to Jakob and Anna Margaretha (Reichert) Siringer on May 28, 1837, in Bavaria (Germany). He was baptized on June 3, 1837, at Evangelisch-Reformierte, Freinsheim, Pfalz, Bayern (Bavaria), about 12 miles (20 kilometers) west of Mannheim.

On March 30, 1864, at the age of 25 or 26, George enlisted as a Private in Company F of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was discharged for disability a little less than a year later on February 6, 1865.

On May 5, 1866, in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri,
George married Augusta Untewheiner (born in Germany or Missouri), and they had at least six children, all born in Missouri: George (born about 1866), Robert (born about 1869), Jacob (born about 1872), William (born about 1875), Sophia (born about 1877), and Emma (born about 1879). At the time of the 1880 U. S. Census, George and his family lived in St. Louis, Missouri, where George worked as a Cigar Salesman and Saloon Keeper. [Note: the George Siringer family appears twice in the 1880 census.]

In 1900, George was living at the Western Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Leavenworth, Delaware Township, Kansas. The Leavenworth "Old Soldiers Home" opened in 1885.

George Siringer died May 28, 1905 (his 68th birthday), and was buried in Leavenworth National Cemetery, Section 19, Row 5, Site 2 (P. O. Box 1694, 4101 S. 4th St. Traffic Way, Leavenworth, KS 66058; 913-768-4105).
