John Tabbert Biography

John G. Tabbert was born April 23, 1818, in Arnswalden, Prussia (Germany). About 1850 he married Dorothea (Dora), born about 1825. Four children were born to them while still in Prussia: John (about 1851), Johanna Louisa (about 1853), Augusta Emilia (about 1855), and Maria Louisa (about 1856). In 1856 they migrated to America where John farmed in the area of Chaska, Carver County, Minnesota. By June 1860, two more children were born in Minnesota: Johanna Henrietta (about 1858), Frederica Albertina (about March 1860). Another son, August, was born about 1862.

It was on March 11, 1862, that 43-year-old John Tabbert enlisted as a private in the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. As part of Company D, he was sent to garrison duty at Fort Abercrombie, Dakota Territory. Tabbert was injured by the occurrence of an umbilical hernia while lifting at a cannon at Ft. Abercrombie.  His hernia being aggravated by a chronic cough, Tabbert was discharged for disability on March 18, 1863, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. On his discharge paper, John was described as a 44 year old farmer, 5' 8 1/4", with light complexion and hair and blue eyes.

After his return home, two more sons were born to John and Dora: William (about 1864) and Julius (about 1867). John died on September 28, 1868, and was buried in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Waconia, Minnesota.

By 1880, Dora and her family had moved to Wilmont, Nobles County, Minnesota. At that time she and three of her sons, August, William, and Julius, shared the farming household.
