John and Elizabeth had six children. The first four were born before John served in the 5th Minnesota. Louise was born about 1857 in Minnesota; John Henry was born November 22, 1859; August was born in August 1861; and Albert was born about 1863.

John enlisted in the 5th Minnesota on September 3, 1864, and was discharged with the regiment on September 6, 1865.

Following the war, John and Elizabeth had two more children: Emma, born about 1873, and Julius William, born January 19, 1876. John Truwe gave up active farm work in 1876 and opened a general store with Ackerman Brothers. On August 15, 1878, 18-year-old son John Henry died as a result of an accident.

The 1880 US Census lists John Truwe's occupation as a Merchant. He and Elizabeth lived in Young America, Carver County, Minnesota, with their four youngest children, age 4 through 19. August and Albert were both employed as store clerks.
John Truwe retired in 1888.
