Samuel Truwe Biography

Private Samuel Truwe was born April 4, 1839. At the time of the 1860 US Census, 20-year-old Samuel was living and working with his parents on their farm in Florence Township, Carver County, Minnesota. (Florence Township was subsequently renamed Young America Township.) Later that same year he married Anna Maria "Marie" Minder, born November 14, 1837 in Erswuehl, Switzerland. Before joining the 5th Minnesota, Sam and Marie had three children, all born in Minnesota: Friedrich ("Fred," born June 3, 1861; died August 29, 1839; buried in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Waconia, Minnesota), Linna (or "Lena," born March 14, 1862; died June 20, 1925, in New Salem, Morton, North Dakota), and Emma (born August 14, 1864; died February 11, 1901; buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Chaska, Minnesota).

Samuel enlisted in the 5th Minnesota Regiment on September 3, 1864, participating in the last year of the regiment's Civil War involvement. He was discharged per order on June 10, 1865.

Following his return home, Sam and Marie had a fourth child, Elise, born about 1867. In 1880, the Sam Truwe household resided on a farm in Section 13 of Camden Township, Carver County, Minnesota, with all four children, now age 13 through 19, at home. By 1895, Sam Truwe had moved to Lester Prairie, McLeod County, Minnesota.

Anna Maria Truwe died on December 5, 1904, in Lester Prairie, McLeod County, Minnesota.  About a year later, Sam Truwe married Mathilda Haase, born October 20, 1853, in Krojanke, Prussia.

Samuel Truwe died on February 21, 1934, in McLeod County, Minnesota. His second wife, Mathilda, died January 25, 1942, also in McLeod County, Minnesota.
