Julius Weyl Biography and Civil War Narrative

Julius Weyl was born about 1828-1834 in Prussia (Germany). He married Louisa, born in Hanover (Germany) to a German father and French mother. Around 1860-1861, Julius and Louisa were in Kentucky where Louisa gave birth to a daughter, Charlotte P. ("Lottie"). According to the 1870 census, another daughter, Hattie, was born about 1862 in Minnesota. The 1880 census shows a son Henry J., who was born about 1862. Perhaps Hattie and Henry are actually the same person with an error being made by one of the census takers.

On March 19, 1862, Julius Weyl enlisted as a Private in Company E of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. During his service in Company E -- which spanned the greater part of the 5th Minnesota's Civil War participation -- Julius Weyl was promoted to Corporal and finally to Sergeant.

On December 16, 1864, the second day of the Battle of Nashville, Sergeant Weyl was seriously wounded in his leg. This likely occurred as the 5th Minnesota was leading the charge on Shy's Hill about 4:00 in the afternoon. Julius Weyl was discharged from the 5th Minnesota Regiment a few months later in March 1865.

In 1870, Julius Weyl was living in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, where he worked as a Grocer, living with his wife, "Lucy" and two children.

By 1880 Julius Weyl had died. Louisa Weyl was now running the retail grocery store, and son Henry (age 18) worked as a Clerk in the store. Daughter Lottie (age 19) continued to live with Louisa.
