Jacob Willemsen Biography

Jacob Willemsen was born October 22, 1837 in Prussia (Germany). Jacob married Eliza Engelen (aka Elizabeth Engel, born 1842) about January or February 1859. Jacob and Eliza had eight children: Arnold, Diedrich, Michael, Gerhard, Catharine, Anna, Jacob (married Annie Meunert), and Elisab. The 1860 US census shows Jacob, age 23, living and farming in Benton Township, Carver County, Minnesota, with his wife Eliza, reportedly age 20, and his son Arnold, age 1.

Jacob enlisted in the 5th Minnesota in September 1864 at age 27. He participated in the military activities of Company D during the last year of the Civil War.

Eliza Willemsen died in 1873. The 1880 U.S. Census shows 42-year-old Jacob living and farming in Benton Township, Carver County, Minnesota, with five children: son Diedrich (age 20), son Gerhard (age 16), daughter Catharine (age 14), daughter Anna (age 12), and son Jacob (age 10).

Then Jacob married Hermine Meinhart, born July 28, 1861. Jacob and Hermine had 12 children: Emma, Bertha (married Oscar Will), Johanna (married Robert Ritter), Matilda (married Ed Heinbockel), William, Otto, Frank, Lydia (married Otto Peschkin), Olga (married Ephraim Lyndahl), Albert (married Valerie Danzer), Alma (married Fred Simon), and Alice (married Grant Owen).

Jacob Willemsen died on September 4, 1907, at age 69, and was buried in Mau Memorial Cemetery, Young America, Carver County, Minnesota. His wife Hermine died December 9, 1920, at age 59, and was buried next to Jacob.
