Michael Willmsen in the Civil
War
Michael Willmsen was born about
1840 in Germany. He migrated to the United States in 1858 at about age
18. Having enlisted on March 11, 1862, at the age of 21, he served as a
private in Company D during the early service of the 5th Minnesota
Regiment in the Civil War. He was discharged for disability on
September 2, 1863.
In November 1868, Michael married Catharine Verruffen in Carver County,
Minnesota. Catharine was born February 24, 1845, and died May 13, 1879.
She was buried in St. John's United Church of Christ cemetery in
Benton Township, Carver County, Minnesota. About three years later in
April 1882, Michael married Christina Lettmeier, born April 1860 in
Germany. Michael was 42 and Christina was 22.
In the 1900 U.S. Census, Michael "Wilemschen" is shown as a 59-year-old
farmer living with his family in Benton Township, Carver County,
Minnesota. He and Christina (now 40 years old) have six children, all
of
whom are living with them. His children are Anna (age 17, born January
1883), Margaret (age 15, born September 1884), John (age 14, born April
1886), Jacob (age 10, born November 1889), Mathilda (age 6, born July
1893), Magdalena (age 5, born May 1895), and Arnold (age 22, born in
December 1877).
Michael died December 24, 1920, in Carver County, Minnesota. His wife,
Christina, died June 10, 1930.
