Ror Shawra, Adept of the Scroll LG Half-elven
Cleric/Mage [Sam Bradford]: Ror was
one of Sam's first real characters as an AD&D gamer and, like
most new gamers (including Yours Truly), there were a few lessons
Sam had to learn the hard way...
Having said that, I'll be the
first to defend Sam's efforts with the half-elf. The classes he
selected aren't the easiest to run by themselves, let alone together,
and by the end of the campaign the Adept's player had made a competent
and level-headed adventurer out of him!
Perhaps Ror's finest exploit
was "doubling" for a long-dead elven cleric of renown,
in order to avert a disastrous church/state schism and expose
the evil seeping into the highest levels of elven society. His
communications with the Companions uncertain at best, the Adept
was able to keep even the dead priest's son from suspecting that
something was wrong with his "father" come back from
the dead.
A role-playing sampler:
- In the early days of the campaign,
the Companions were seeking employment as armed escort for a
treasure caravan. The captain interviewed the group one at a
time, and Ror, knowing that priests of his Order were thought
of as bookworms and not sword-swingers, was a little careless
in proving his worth...
Knowing that only his spells could
get him a spot on the team, Ror chose spookand used
the captain himself as the subject of his demonstration. The
officer made his save, and the next thing the others saw was
the half-elf flying head-first through the office door and into
the opposite wall. (The poor Adept endured the nickname "Spook
Boy" for many months after that...)
- In an assault upon the lair
of a frost giant, the Companions were startled by the arrival
of the giant's stable of polar bears. Thinking quickly, Ror managed
to ensnare one of the largest in an animal friendship
spell before the giant could whip the bears into a fighting frenzy.
The sight of the cleric astride the placid bear's broad back
did nothing for the giant's morale. Ride 'em, cowboy!
