Instructions for downloading: Student Version of S-PLUS from e-academy S+Resample library data libraries for introductory statistics By Tim Hesterberg 9/28/05 Feedback welcome. Comment -- these instructions are long, but most steps are straightforward. -------------------------------------------------- (A) REGISTER (A1) Visit http://elms03.e-academy.com/splus/ (A2) Click the "Register" button. This takes you to https://elms03.e-academy.com/splus/index.cfm?loc=login/register (A3) Follow instructions there to register with e-academy. (B) LOG IN (B1) Once you have registered, return to http://elms03.e-academy.com/splus/ (B2) Click the "Log In" button. (B3) Enter your log in and password. (C) DOWNLOAD INSTALLER (C1) Click the "Software" tab. (C2) Click the first S-PLUS icon (the one for download, not CD). (This is free, you do not need a credit card.) (C3) Click the "Get It" button. (C4) Save the "INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING S-PLUS 7 STUDENT EDITION" (you will need them later). (C5) Click the "I agree" button. (C6) Print the page for your records; especially keep the serial number and web registration code. (C7) Click the "Download Software" (C8) Your browser may ask if you want to Save to Disk, or run. I'm saving to disk. Save it in a location you can find; this could create a file "SPLUS7.exe". (C9) With Windows Explorer, browse to the location. (D) DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE (D1) Double-click S-PLUS7.exe. This starts the downloader. (D2) "Step 1 Authorization". The installer asks for a drive with enough disk space; accept the default or browse to another folder. (D2) "Step 2 Downloading". Go for lunch; the software takes a while to download, 495 MB. (D3) "Step 3 Unpacking". This happens automatically. (D4) "Step 4 Launch Install". Click the "Launch Install" button. (E) RUN INSTALLER The previous step launched the installer. You should see a window with four buttons on the left, and a number of S-PLUS and Insightful logos. (E1) Click the button for "Install/Configure S-PLUS on your system". The remaining steps are largely self-explanatory, you may work from the screen instead of these instructions. (E2) Welcome. You should see a screen "Welcome to the setup wizard" This recommends disabling virus detection programs. Click "Next". (E3) Enter your name, college or university, and Serial Number (from the page you printed earlier). (E4) Read the license agreement, and accept the terms. (E5) Choose one of the choices; Complete if you have space, Minimal if you are short on space, or Custom if you know what you are doing. (E6) Select a Destination Folder, either the default (this is easiest, now and later) or another. (E7) "Select S_PROJ". It is simplest if you accept the default. (E8) "Select Start Menu Folder". I suggest accepting the default. (E9) "Program startup options". Not too important, you can change these options later within the program. (E10) "Ready to Install". Click "Finish". (F) ONLINE REGISTRATION At some point (probably when you try G1 below) you may need to register your copy inline with Insightful. (I am unable to check this now.) (G) TRY IT OUT! (G1) Start S-PLUS, under Start:All Programs:S-PLUS7.0:S-PLUS (G2) Under the Help menu, Online Manuals, open the Getting Started Guide. (G3) Try it out! (H) DOWNLOAD THE S+Resample library Open your browser to http://www.insightful.com/downloads/libraries There are installation instructions near the top, you may view these. Under S+Resample, click on the "Windows" version. Proceed with registration and downloading; this should be much simpler than above. (I) DOWNLOAD THE data library Open your browser to http://www.insightful.com/Hesterberg/bootstrap and click the third link, "Bootstrap for Introductory Statistics" (this takes you a bit lower in the same page). Download either "PBSdata.zip" or "IPSdata.zip", depending which book you are using. Unzip, and follow the instructions in the INSTALL.txt file. This should be much simpler than above. You should be ready to work. For additional information, start S-PLUS, open your data library, and see the help documents added to the menus.
