PC User Group
Search PC User Group site.
The PC User Group of the ACGNJ meets the third Friday of every
month at 8:00 PM at the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad Building in Scotch
Plains, New Jersey.
The group was chaired by Jo-Anne Head from January 1995 through June 2000. She
then stepped down to do other things. We would like to thank Jo-Anne
for her dedication, and hope that we can continue the same level of
enthusiasm that she has shown. The group now has no permanent
chair, but continues to meet.
Our focus is on any topic that touches on personal computers.
Some of our meetings are fairly technical and some are oriented
to total newbies. Our members reflect this mix.
Come out to a meeting and get to know us, we're friendly.
We especially want women to attend, since more men than women
attend meetings. I know you're out there, ladies. Come on!
Directions to the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad.
2001 Meeting Schedule

ONLY. Update: The lucky winners of Winfax Pro Software were: Art Williams
and Chip Vincent.
I will also be handing out special Symantec coupons giving user group members
a special price break (expires 4/29/99) on all their software.
This version of Winfax lets you send and receive faxes using Windows98, Windows95
or WindowsNT, and it lets you use one copy of the program to share faxing
capabilities across a network.
- February 19: This is a follow-up meeting to the February
5, 1999 Main Meeting topic, "Building the Home Network, Part II: Practice,"
by Frank Warren. Frank will string a network in real-time during the Main
Meeting at the club location. We expect that after you try this at home, you
will have a lot of questions, so this month's PC User Group meeting is devoted
to answering those questions. A home network can cost less than $50 ($20 for
the network card, $10 for the cable). You can do it.
- January 15: This was going to be a follow-up meeting
to the January 8, 1999 Main Meeting topic, "Building the Home Network, Part I:
Theory," by Frank Warren, but since the Main Meeting was canceled due
to the nasty storm on February 8, Frank will give his talk tonight. Frank
will explain the theory behind building your own home network. Then at next
month's Main Meeting he will build a network, live, during the meeting. It
is not all that easy to network your home computers if you've never done it
before, so come out and learn how to do it!!

- September 18: Pete Fillingham showed
us how to use Norton Utilities 3.0. We then raffled off a copy
of Norton Utilities 3.0. Mark Braxton was the lucky winner.
Everyone else got a Symantec pen.
Symantec has provided us with a special User Group price for
various
Symantec products. See me for the form. It expires 11/17/98.
If you are interesting in buying Norton Anti-Virus 5.0, Norton
Utilities 3.0, PCAnywhere32, Winfax Pro 9.0, and a number
of other Symantec products, this is worth your while.
The forms will be available at the October PC User Group meeting
and at any other ACGNJ meetings I happen to attend (such as
Main Meetings).
Note:
The Multimedia and Mobile Computing Activity meets at 7 PM.
Tonight's topic is Webtricity.
- August 21: Summer PC UG Party!! Come and enjoy ice cream,
cake and soda.
Tonight's speaker is J.D. Abolins. Read his bio.
J.D. Abolins is speaking on Security and Privacy on the Internet.
Cookies? Spam? Online snooping? Shopping via the Web? Electronic
stalking?
Workplace computer privacy?
These are among the common online security and privacy concerns.
Technological
and social changes are making many of us wonder how safe and private
are we.
We'll take a look at these and other subjects, separating fact from
hype. The
emphasis will be on a wise "consumer" approach to staying safe online.
This
approach helps people decide what measures are right for their needs
and
concerns.
Note: The MultiMedia and Mobile Computing Activity meets on August
21 at 7 PM. Steve Rodriguez will do an overview of all the Webticity2
applications from Micrographx.
Another month he will go in depth on the Webticity2 applications.
- July 17: Meeting canceled because I will be away on
a cruise.
- June 19: We had a topic but
my speaker, Steven Rodriguez, got sick and had to cancel.
We had a prolonged Random Access-style session. Many questions
were
asked and answered by the membership. We discussed Windows98 upgrade
issues, chip upgrades, hard drive upgrades, and graphic file format
conversion problems. A number of members' problems got solved.
There was a raffle at the end of the meeting of Adobe PageMill 3.0 and
the 200 mHz MMX chip from IDT. This
raffle was open to Paid Up ACGNJ Members Only, and all future
raffles at PC User Group meetings will be open to paid up members
only. The rest of you can watch and
wish. Or join the club.
The lucky winners were:
- Evan Williams, Adobe PageMill 3.0
- Chip Vincent, 200 mHz WinChip (yes, Chip won the chip).
The 200 mHz chip (comparable
to a Pentium) is manufactured by IDT (Integrated Device Technology) and
they call it the Winchip. If your motherboard is 1997 or newer, you should
be able to use this chip. If your motherboard is an Award BIOS, the chip
is a drop-in replacement. Everyone else has to set a jumper or something.
Included with the chip is an installation guide.
Both PageMill and the 200 mHz chip are items I got at InterGalactic.
Note:The MultiMedia and Mobile Computing Activity which meets on
June 19 at 7 PM, is canceled. Steve Rodriguez is not well today.
- May 15: Steve Rodriguez discussed the latest Pioneer
CD ROM drives and their use. He went over the pros and cons between slot load
and tray eject.
- One of the Pioneer CD ROM drives is the DR-504S 32X Atapi CDROM drive.
The "S" stands for Slot Load which means there is no tray.
- Its counterpart is the DR-50 6S, which is the 32X SCSI-2 version slot
load CDROM drive.
These two models demonstrate the technology between Atapi IDE and SCSI, how
far they have advanced, that there is now no difference between the SCSI and
Atapi in speed, cache and data flow. The data buffer is 128 KB for each drive.
The minimum 2.1 MB/s is 14X and the maximum is 4.8 MB/s which is 32X. It's
"bursty".
Disk formats both drives can handle: CD, DA, CD-ROM Mode 1, CD-ROM XA Mode
2 (form 1 and 2), Photo CD Multisession. The only difference between the
two drives is whether you use SCSI or Atapi.
- April 17: Meeting canceled due to TCF. See you at Trenton
Computer Festival ("TCF") at Mercer County Community College that weekend!
I am running the PC Users Forum at TCF on Sunday morning. Stop by with a PC
question.
- March 20: Rick Elbanna shared with us his experiences
with a program he bought recently, WinBloze by Microshoft. It's actually a
Win95 utility that makes Win95 work better. Also, we expect to have an update
from Steve Rodriguez on the Hauppauge board that was offered to members at
the January meeting: click here.
- Multimedia Activity: Steve demonstrated the Shark 250 megabyte parallel
drive. It's portable and can plug into your laptop or desktop and is half
the size of a zip drive and it's lighter. If there's time, Steve will also
demonstrate LivePix Deluxe 2.0, which
he was going to demonstrate last month but didn't due to miscellaneous hardware
problems.
- February 20: Steven Rodriguez will demonstrate Deluxe
LivePix 2.0, the new version. It's a photo editing and manipulation tool.
It does greeting cards, invitations, calendars, t-shirts, stickers, brochures,
web pages, business cards, stationery and certificates and more. It can do
GOO-like things. (photo special effects). We are going to take several pictures
using Steve's new Panasonic digital camera, the CoolShot, then we will import
them into LivePix and edit them and manipulate them by using special effects.
We will then use the pictures in multiple formats to demonstrate the power
and capabilities of the program. Website: livepix.com.
There are more capabilities and Steven will tell you about them.
- NOTE: The MultiMedia and Mobile Computing Activity meets at 7 PM
the same night and will introduce the topic being discussed at PC UG. In the
future, Steve plans presentations on the Shark 250 megabyte portable drive,
Phillips Velo Version 1 hand PC, Adaptec SCSI world, Wacom touch tablets,
Ricoh CD-ROM burning, CD-R's and CD-RW's.
- January 16: Steven Rodriguez discussed and demonstrated
the Hauppauge board. This discussion started at 7 PM (see below).
- NOTE: The new MultiMedia and Mobile Computing SIG met on January
16 at 7 PM at the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad and the topic was Video Capture
Boards from Hauppauge. Steven Rodriguez
demonstrated the Hauppauge WinTV board. This board is cable-ready, has AM/FM
receiver and Intercast, which is the dual frequency that is sent out on cable
and lets you surf the Web like MSNBC, ESPN, and others. Signals are sent through
your cable TV and you see Web pages. It is also a video capture board. Also
it is a small PCI board.
Steve uses a Cyber21 Model 10MX laptop for his MultiMedia SIG presentations.
This laptop has a Pentium 166 MMX chip and a 13.3" display.
- December 19: Jo-Anne Head was unanimously
re-elected as leader of the PC User Group and will serve throughout
1998. We had a Christmas grab bag. Participants brought
a computer-oriented pngt for the grab bag. Several members brought
munchies for everyone to enjoy.
Steve Rodriguez demonstrated Internet Phone 5.0
with Video. We raffled off several Internet
Phone 5.0 license codes, one of which was won by Arnold Milstein.
The codes unlock the demo you can
download
from the Web
to get a fully licensed, fully functioning
copy of Internet Phone 5.0.
We also raffled off three t-shirts and some other software.
- NOTE: The new MultiMedia and Mobile Computing SIG met on December 19 at 7 PM and the
topic was Intro to Internet Phone 5.0.
- November 21: Pete Fillingham discussed LINUX on the PC. We raffled off two copies of Adobe PageMill 2.0, still
in the shrinkwrap. The lucky winners were
Briggs Longbotham and Bill Welford, both fairly new to the
PC User Group.
- NOTE: The new MultiMedia and Mobile Computing SIG met on November 21 at 7 PM and the topic was
ICQ. Steve Rodriguez hosted the meeting. Steve used a
Nimantics Model 10MX
laptop for his MultiMedia SIG presentations. This laptop has a Pentium
166 MMX chip and a 13.3" display.
- October 17: Steve Rodriguez spoke on Kai's Photo Soap
and demonstrated it.
This is a standalone graphics program for photographic import, export
and manipulation. Kai has made many plug-ins to PhotoShop and since
the plug-ins were so successful, Kai developed Soap into a standalone program.
- September 19:
Partition Magic presented to the group.
They are represented by Linda
Barlow.
- August 15:
Frank Warren, the head of the ACGNJ Genealogy SIG, spoke to us on CGI scripting, and showed
us how CGI scripts work. The meeting ran 30 minutes overtime
because we were so interested in the topic.
CGI is important if you are writing
HTML and want to use a form on your web page. The form is easy to
create if you use a program like WebEdit, but you have to link the
form's Submit button to a CGI script so that when the user fills out
the form and clicks Submit, the information goes somewhere. The
CGI script collects the information on the form and sends it to
the Webmaster or whoever else wants the form's data. CGI has lots of
other uses, but this particular one interests me a lot!
- July 18: The storm caused a blackout that basically
canceled the meeting. The speaker has been rescheduled to the
August meeting.
- June 20: Rick Elbanna,
the President of the Online
Marketing Network, spoke on Marketing on the
Internet. We raffled off a 33.6 modem as a door prize
(thanks Rick!) The meeting was catered and doubled as our
annual Summer Party.
- May 16: Michael Pathe from US Robotics spoke to us about
their new Sportster 56K modem with
x2TM technology.
x2 lets users download
graphics,
audio and video from the Internet at speeds nearly twice as fast as
28.8 Kbps
modems.
There were special prices for
ACGNJ members on a
selection
of U.S. Robotics products (I bought a 56K modem),
available at the meeting only.
For more information about x2 Technology, U.S. Robotics products or
other User
Group programs around the country, visit the U.S. Robotics web site at
www.usr.com or call 1-800 DIAL USR.
*Note:
All x2 products are capable of 56 Kbps downloads; however, due to FCC
rules
which restrict power output, current download speeds are limited to 53
Kbps.
If you use WorldNet pay attention! WorldNet told me on 5/2/97
that they are going to use US Robotics 56K modems. There are
incompatible 56K modems out there...so if you want to get on
WorldNet at 56K you will need a US Robotics 56K modem.
- April 18: Toby Riley
spoke to the group about Quicken by Intuit and showed us how to use it.
- March 21: Neil Manheimer, the General Manager of ComCast Online
Communications, spoke on cable modems. With the Comcast cable modem
you can have a 500K to 2 megabytes bps connection to the Internet.
Compare that with a traditional modem top speed of 33.6K or the
new 56K modems. We're talking about a modem speed 10 times faster
than the fast new 56K technology that isn't quite available yet.
If you live in Woodbridge, you can get connected to the Internet
for free until April 2, 1997. Call Comcast at 908-851-6605
to request to participate in the beta trial.
The question came up
during
Neil's presentation, does ComCast Online censor newsgroups/Usenet.
The short answer is, No. There is no censorship. If you want to
prevent certain types of Internet information from access by
your children, there are software programs you can install at
home to filter the information, such as NetNanny or CyberPatrol.
- February 21: Stephanie
Fleming, who is a Reseller Marketing Representative for Microsoft,
spoke on
FrontPage97. Free copies of FrontPage97 were raffled off to attendees. Check out the Microsoft web site for New York, New Jersey
and Connecticut.
- January 17: Steve
Rodriguez spoke on Multimedia Design Tips and Tricks.
He covered the basics starting from audio, creating and using .wav
files; moving into graphics and .avi files, creating your own .avi
movies; and
putting it all together for desktop and web design. Steve filmed the
PC User Group audience during his presentation.
- December 20: Bob Todd spoke on My Christmas PC. We
also had a Christmas Party, complete with egg nog, cookies, soda,
macaroni salad, cole slaw and
cold cuts/sandwiches, and a Gift Exchange. Those who
participated brought a computer-oriented pngt for the grab bag. This was
something you have at home in your collection of flea-market finds,
etc. Wrap was optional. Everyone had to remove the pngt they
got from the premises. Some of the items given away included
Microsoft Office for Windows95, OS/2 Warp, and a Seventh Level
Software game on CD (all 3 items were still in shrinkwrap).
Two door prizes were raffled off, they were a one year unlimited account
on America On-Line, and a one year unlimited account on castle.net.
The members enjoyed the grab bag and
we are thinking of doing it again soon, maybe this summer.
We held elections for head of the PC User Group for 1997.
Jo-Anne Head was re-elected.
- November 15: Neil Sanford discussed and demonstrated a global
satellite positioning system. This is good for when you are driving in
your car and are lost, or maybe you are out hiking and find a
beautiful spot and you want to bookmark it so you can find it again.
- October 18: 7th Level sent Julie Bernard who discussed their educational and game software. There was a raffle of their games and educational software.
- September 20: Chris Hallberg of Microsoft discussed the merits of Internet Explorer as opposed to Netscape Navigator. Internet Explorer runs on all versions of Windows.
We had a Microsoft software raffle.
Get Internet Explorer.
- August 16: Sun Microsystems sent Ralph Severini who discussed Java as it relates to PCs and the Internet. Following their presentation we
had an ice cream and pizza party.
- July 19: Dennis Ritchie of Lucent Technologies/Bell Labs spoke on Inferno as it relates to PCs and the Internet.
Inferno software is now available on
the Web. You can get the Inferno operating system, the
Limbo programming language, a developer's toolkit, documentation
and sample applications, including a Web browser and email.
- June 21: Bryan Garnham discussed Novell networks. He is a
Novell Certified Netware Engineer (CNE) with experience
in Netware 3.1X and 4.1, local and wide area networking, and
PC-to-mainframe connectivity.
Topics covered included:
- physical connections
- hardware required
- software required on both the workstation and server
- communications protocols
- basic network design
- security issues
- May 17: Frank Warren spoke on perl and perl programming. Frank heads the Genealogy SIG of the ACGNJ.
- April 19: No meeting
due to TCF. See you at the festival.
- March 15: Bob Berto spoke on Shareware Gems and
downloading shareware from bulletin boards. Bob runs the
club's BBS.
- February's meeting was canceled due to the snow.
If there is a PC topic you would like to see covered at a
meeting, please write and tell me
what it is.
