Burger and Sourdough

Loaf

Growing up in the Midwest I didn't have exposure to sourdough so I thought the French bread I grew up with was good. Ha. If you can't get sourdough, sweet French is ok, the important thing is try it. (Just make sure the bread isn't too crusty or you'll break your teeth. Try the kind in the plastic bag.)

1    loaf, sourdough or sweet french bread

1 1/4 #  lean ground beef (or turkey, just add 1 t oil)
1/3 c  chili sauce or catsup
2 t  horseradish

2 t  good quality mustard

2 t  Worchestershire sauce

   1/4    small onion, minced
1    clove garlic, minced

(your favorite ethnic or regional seasonings)

     cheese slices, optional

     tomato slices, optional

Combine ground meat and next ingredients together in a bowl and mix well. Slice bread horizontally and spread both halves with meat mixture, making it thicker on perimiter than in middle. With fork, press down gently in both directions.

Broil 7-10 min. approx. 7 in. from flame. After 6 min add the cheese and tomato if desired. Cook another minute or so.until the cheese is melted and the meat is done, then slice and eat.

If you are finding the bread is getting too brown before the meat is done, try covering sides of the bread with foil (do not put foil under the bread as it will make it soggy.
