Total climb is about 1000 feet. The parking area in the Chester-Blandford State Forest, off Route 20, on Sanderson Brook Road, in Chester. The entrance to the forest is marked by a sign for Sanderson Brook Falls. Begin by hiking south on Sanderson Brook Road with Sanderson Brook on your right. After crossing several feeder brooks on bridges, look for a trail to your right at about .75 miles; its marked with a blue blaze with an image of an acorn. This short trail leads to the base of Sanderson Brook Falls. After viewing the falls from the base, retrace your steps back to the road, make a right, and continue to climb. In a few hundred feet you can again view the falls from above through a clearing on your right. Continue the climb and pass an old chimney at the first road junction. Bearing left you reach Observation Road, which leads to the wooded summit of Observation Hill. The road turns into a trail which soon affords scenic vistas to the east, north and west. After the third vista the trail descends steeply along the H. Newman Marsh Memorial Trail to a junction with Sanderson Brook Road. Here there is a display that explains the history of the area. The parking area is a few hundred feet north. |
