Trail Map - South Section
|
A fascinating 4.5 mile hike of moderate difficulty through beautiful Holland Glen and the stonework remains of a pioneer farming community near the crest of West Hill. Parking is available on the north side of Route 9. The M-M trail climbs along Hop Brook, which splashes over a series of cascades as it descends through Holland Glen. Near the top of the glen is a larger waterfall. At the top, the trail turns west to leave the glen and climbs over a series of hills. Looking back, you can sometimes glimpse the Holyoke Range to the SW. At 2.5 miles the trail turns east onto a woodland road then turns northeast. For the next 1.25 miles you pass along an elaborate network of stone fences, remnants of a pioneering farming community that once lived in the West Hill area. Continue downhill, cross Gulf Road and climb to a plateau containing an open field. A little farther along is Packardville Road and the approach to Mt. Lincoln. You can return by going east on Packardville Rd. then South on Gulf Road then southeast along Route 9. The downhill section along Gulf Road is very pleasing with Scarborough Brook as your companion. |
