Suggested Day Hike

Monadnock State Park, NH

Route 124 to the Summit of Mt. Monadnock

Mt. Monadnock is the second most frequently climbed mountain in the world. It's a moderate hike of 2.3 miles with a climb of about 1800 feet. The upper part of the climb consists of a rock scramble with panoramic views in three directions. The bare summit provides spectacular views in all directions and plenty of room for the throngs of picnicking climbers.

New Hampshire State Parks maintains a parking area off Rt. 124 between Jaffrey and Marlborough at the Old Toll Road (blue). They provide facilities and drinking water. The parking fee is $2.50 (Aug 97). Pets are NOT permitted in the park. The Metacomet-Monadnock Trail (red) intersects Rt. 124 one half mile west of this parking area. Parking is not permitted along Rt 124.

From New Hampshire Route 124
to the Summit of Mt. Monadnock

The M-M (a.k.a. Royce) Trail begins north of a small open area which is posted with no parking signs. Immediately, you cross the first of six stone walls. You gently climb. At the third stone wall you enter Monadnock State Park. At the sixth stone wall you've climbed 700 feet and reached the Cart Path. Shortly thereafter the trail joins the White Arrow Trail (red), which leads to the summit.

The climb becomes steeper and rockier. Suddenly the trees disappear and you are treated to gorgeous panoramic views of the surrounding country side. A little farther on you get you first glimpse of the summit.

Join the mass of humanity and take in the views from the top, explore the summit, enjoy a picnic, and rest for the trip back down. To go directly to the parking area, follow the White Arrow Trail to the site of the Halfway House; then continue downhill on either the newer Old Halfway House Trail (green) or the older, well worn, Old Toll Road (blue).
