M-M Trail Wendell State Forest, MA

From Ruggles Pond to Farley, MA


This 5 mile section of the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail traverses a variety of terrain through Wendell State Forest. You begin at Ruggles Pond (969 ft.), descending along Lyons Brook, climb a hill west of the Whales Head, and descend to the Millers River (375 ft.) via Mormon Hollow Brook, which you ford three times. You may return via Farley Road, Mormon Hollow Road and Jerusalem Road back to Ruggles Pond.

Ample parking is available at Wendell State Forest Headquarters or Ruggles Pond. Leaving Ruggles Pond you descend north along the east bank of Lyons Brook. You pass a shelter and a spring before viewing a waterfall. on your left. Continue downhill until a rushing stream joins Lyons Brook from the right. The trail turns northeast and steeply uphill until it reaches Jerusalem Road. Follow this road south then east. Just beyond some large cliffs the trail leaves the road and again climbs steeply to a summit. Look for two side trails leading to vistas to the west. After the second vista the trail begins descending. It turns east along rock strewn Davis Road, this portion of which is closed. It reaches Mormon Hollow Brook and turns north onto Farley Road. Upon reaching the power line the trail leaves the road and follows Mormon Hollow Brook towards the Millers River. You ford this brook three times. The trail then follows the Millers River upstream, detours onto the railroad tracks for a while, and again descends to the left bank of the Millers River. Continue until you cross a bridge over the river and enter into the village of Farley, MA. Follow the blazes throught the streets of Farley. The trail reenters the woods along Briggs Brook, below the Northfield Mountain Reservoir. The return route via Farley Road, Mormon Hollow Road and Jerusalem Road is longer but has significantly less climb.
