This section of the Metacomet-Monadnock trail begins at the Westfield River and ends at the Massachusetts Turnpike. One way distance is 5 miles. Parking is available at the Big Y parking lot on Route 20. At the traffic light, cross Route 20, go beneath the railroad underpass then onto Sikes Ave. The M-M trail makes a sharp left to leave the road just before the road turns to the right. The trail climbs steeply to the top of a ridge then turns north. To the west is a large sand pit. Continue north along the ridge. At about one mile you come to the Pioneer Valley Sportsman Club. Be alert, the trail passes right through an archery range. Soon you will reach a powerline. The trail leading NE goes to the Bearhole Reservoir. The M-M trail climbs steeply SW. The huge Lane Quarry appears to the west. The trail then winds its way north through a mature oak/hemlock forest for about two miles. After making a sharp turn west the trail descends to the Massachusetts Turnpike. You may choose to return by crossing underneath the Mass Pike onto Old Holyoke Road. Follow this road west then go south on East Mountain Road. Look for the alpacas of the Maple Brook Farm on your left. Continuing south, you will pass the East Mountain School, then the Western Mass Hospital just before reaching Route 20. Follow this highway east along the Westfield River until you reach the Big Y parking lot. |
