Mustang II Builders Log

I purchased the plans for a Mustang II over a year ago. This afternoon (01/25/2002) I started the first work on the plans. This documentation will track the progress (or lack thereof) for this project.

The first thing to do is "READ THE MANUAL!". Then do it again. After reading it about three times remember to go back and read it before starting a new segment of the project.

The first progress on building the plane is to start making parts. You can go to the link below to check on my progress.

Making Mustang II Parts

After I make a bunch of parts (literally hundreds) I will start a page on assembling sub-assemblies. These are things like the center section, the outer wing panels, the rudder, elevator, flap, and tailfeathers.

Once there is a good collection of sub-assemblies I can start assembling the "Air Frame". This is when it will really begin to look like an airplane. Well, an airplane without an engine, canopy, controls, instrument panel, and maybe a few other items (wheels?).

The stage where you have the air frame essentially complete is when you are 90% done with 90% to go. It looks like it is nearly done but there is a lot of work remaining (roughly half way). Installation of landing gear, brakes, routing brake lines, installing controls & linkages, figuring out what you can afford for the instrument panel, and hanging an engine are time consuming and a major part of the construction. Unfortunately there is no MVP (Major Visual Progress) for a long time when you enter this phase.

As the Project progresses I will also keep a running total of costs on the following page:
