Milling is expensive, time consuming, and labor intensive as the process requires removing all existing metal from the wood, i.e. nails etc, and running the refurbished wood through a metal detector to ensure that it can then be run through a saw. Because of the lack of sources to mill the wood and the enormous cost in doing so, Stein decided to purchase the milling equipment himself and hire the skilled labor needed to salvage the timbers.
