My First Motorcycle - 1974 Honda TL125

Honda TL125

Yep, that's me! I got this bike as a Christmas present in 1974, and I'd have to say it's the best present I've ever received! It was a trials bike, designed for "observed trials" competition, where riders compete over "sections" of very difficult terrain and are penalized for putting their feet down. I actually competed in a couple of events, but the bike was too underpowered to be competitive (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!). One neat thing about this bike was that it was designed to go through deep water - the air intake was up under the seat, and the exhaust was up high on the right side. You could ride it through water right up to the seat without any problems, and I actually did this occasionally. Another unusual thing was the transmission. Because it was designed for trials, the first three gears were very low speed and very close together, and the fourth and fifth gears are much higher "road" gears designed for traveling from section to section. So as a result you had to shift a lot, and the gaps between third and fourth, and fourth and fifth were a real pain. But it was a good beginner bike and I enjoyed riding it. One time I challenged my sister to a race, my bike against her horse. Because of the low power, close together gears, and the fact that the noise from the bike scared the hell out of the horse, I ended up losing, much to my embarrassment!  I ended up selling it to a friend around 1977.
