Extreme Comfort Biking

Revive (Giant)

I know it looks funny — I get stares and comments everywhere I ride — but I love my Revive.

The seat slides up and down on a diagonal rail, making it easy to adjust the bike to exactly match my leg length for maximum power and comfort. The handle bar adjusts front to back and up and down to position my arms in a comfortable neutral position, with my elbows at my sides. The back rest and upright position makes even long rides easy and comfortable for my back. (Often, my back feels better when I get off the bike than it did when I got on, something I've never experienced with any other bicycle.) Of course, my butt gets sore, just like it has on every other bike I've ever ridden, but not as sore as it would on a typical skinny saddle. The Revive's saddle is wide and cushy to match my butt.

The way the Revive spares me the back pain makes me a lot more eager to ride than I used to be when I was struggling with a standard hybrid.

The smaller wheels and forward pedal position classes the Revive as a "semi-recumbent". While the small wheels make me a bit slower, I believe they also give me extra power for climbing hills.

I found out about Revives when I rented one from Laughing Dog bike rental in Damascus, Virginia, to ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail.

I know such a specialized bike won't float everyone's boat, but the Revive works very well for me.

Suede (Giant)

The Suede's broad seat and upright position are reminiscent of the bikes I rode when I was young. Of course, it has the wide gearing and hand brakes that are more common these days, at least on adult bikes.

Being able to put both feet on the ground at any time provides a nice sense of security, especially for riders who are older or, like me, haven't ridden in a long time and are re-developing confidence in their biking skills.
