![]() Applying the varnish I finished mounting the seat frames and yoke in the canoe. Then I epoxied the bolts in place and covered the bolt heads with a cherry plug. Next, I sanded all the woodwork and removed the seats and yoke for finishing. Because it's winter and cold, putting varnish on the canoe in the garage would probably result in a mess. My wife and I moved the canoe into our lap pool room where it is warm and sealed off from the rest of the house (so fumes don't gas us out). This picture shows the canoe after the first coat of varnish has been applied to the outer hull. The sawhorses under the middle of the canoe hold the varnished seat frames and yoke while they dry.

![]() First coat of varnish Here's another shot of the canoe after the first coat of varnish. It's hard to believe it's sunny in January in Seattle.

![]() Varnishing complete I put five coats of UV-blocking varnish on the outside of the hull and four coats on the inside. Ultraviolet light is bad for epoxy and the UV-blocking varnish keeps the epoxy from clouding from the suns rays.
