host show. However
we do get to see as guest panelist sitting in for Henry Morgan, none other than
Dick Clark
Among the many talented teenagers who appear on this show before they became
even more
famous, actress Carol Lynley (then appearing in a Broadway show), and future
NBA legend
Oscar Robertson (then just a college sophmore). And also appearing at age 15,
chess legend

306) 4/16/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Cornel Wilde guest. Funny spot involving the inventor of "stature enhancing"
shoes (elevated),
because of the byplay with Henry and the fact that he was once sponsored by
Adler Elevated
Shoes, the inventor's chief rival. Cornel Wilde's spot involves the old trick
of putting Garry
in a box and sticking swords through it. The panel doesn't free Garry from the
box until
after the credits have almost finished rolling leading to more hilarity 9487
DV-630
307) 4/30/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
All Star

a woman

slides of a Mad
Magazine spoof of IGAS and panel photos through distorted lenses 9493 DV-630
308) 5/7/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guest: Phil Silvers Also appearing is a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian
of
"Mutiny On The Bounty" fame. Henry is really at his most abrasive
with the first
contestant, a lovelorn columnist 9493 DV-630
309) 5/14/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows

310) 5/21/58. Henry Morgan subs as host during the stint that will eventually
lead to
Allan Sherman's dismissal. Jackie Cooper is guest panelist and the guest is
none other
than the Brady Bunch's Ann B. Davis, during the days when her claim to fame
was as

Guest: Lloyd Bridges 9508 DV-630
313) 6/4/58 Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows Guest:
Dana Andrews
After one show from 59 and one from 60, GSN goes back to the 58 cycle. Dana
Andrews guest,
and this show is one week before the Tony Curtis disaster, so if it airs it
will be tomorrow.
Of greater note for this program, the theme is celebrating weddings, and the
second spot
involves Jack Narz, coming out with a bag over his head with the secret, "I
introduced
Bill Cullen to his wife." Ann Cullen and Jack's then-wife (Ann's sister)
appear too. Jack
is referred to as the host of "Dotto" 9515 DV-630
314) 6/11/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Jan Murray, and Jayne Meadows
Henry Morgan
is guest host - Guest: Tony Curtis The infamous Tony Curtis show that got Allan
Sherman
fired, which many of us have read about for years but were never able to judge
for ourselves
until now. First, we can clear up one misperception Fates left in the book concerning
the
booking of Jan Murray for the panel that night. Contrary to Fates' impression
that Allan was
so dense he booked NY kid Murray the night of a spot centering on teaching the
panel NY
games children played, Murray was in fact a last minute substitute for an unnamed
guest
panelist that Henry Morgan says "conked out" but which we know from
TV Guide listings
was supposed to be Dick Clark. First spot is a couple with 17 children, all
their own and no
twins. Second spot is mother and son who graduated from high school that week.
And now
for Tony's spot: Was Fates' characterization, accurate? The answer is a resounding
yes.For
one thing, Tony didn't present this "teach the panel these games"
bit in the form of a secret
they had to guess. What you had happen was Tony wheel these out and he and Henry
went
off into these long descriptions of them and this went on for about ten minutes,
with only one
minor bright spot (that Fates didn't mention) when the panel had to eat candy
off the wax paper.
The rest that Fates described, the tank made of a spool and rubber band that
barely moved,
Betsy Palmer's inept "One-Two-Three O'Leary" and Jayne's equally inept
Chinese handball were
all there and going on and on for no rhyme and reason it seemed like. So yes,
Fates' description
of this as a spot that laid there and died was dead on the money and its not
surprising at all to
see why Allan was given his walking papers after this show. The audience politely
applauded
a couple demonstrations but was largely silent throughout the proceedings that
you wondered
if Henry and company forgot they were there. There is one post-script though
that makes the
episode a pleasant surprise. After this ten minutes of seemingly pointless demonstration,
Tony
finally reveals he has a secret that the panel only gets one question to guess.
The secret is that
he's about to become a father again. That child grew up to be his beautiful
and talented daughter
Jamie Lee Curtis. 9515 DV-659
315) 6/18/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
6th Anniversary Show Guest: No guest, the first post-Allan Sherman show.
Garry says to Henry about last week, "You did a great job." No reference
to the
Curtis stunt, but there is a reference to the first contestants, the family
with 17 children
and how Betsy and Jane went out to babysit 11 of them eventually. Theme is seeing
if
panel can solve secrets they didn't get the first time with returning contestants)
9522 DV-659
316) 6/25/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guests: Olivia de Haviland and Jackie Cooper briefly appears at the end in relation
to the last bit, involving West Point cadets meeting blind dates on stage.Bill
refers
to his work doing Army football games the year before during the segment and
at
the beginning Garry holds up a copy of Look that profiles Bill, but remembers
to
tear out a competing cigarette ad off the back cover. More significantly to
note is
that Chester Feldman is now officially credited as producer of the show, so
that could indicate
it took Goodson more than a week to take care of all the formalities in getting
Allan Sherman
off the program which would explain why he was still credited on the previous
week's show 9522 DV-659
317) 7/2/58 Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows Guest:
Art Carney 9525 DV-659
318) 7/9/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guest: Arlene Dahl - First contestant is Elvis Presley's grandfather Jessie
who sings a couple
folk tunes. Last spot involves Jayne getting her typhoid shot prior to leaving
for Europe 9525 DV-659
319) 7/16/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guest: Keenan Wynn The second contestant was the winner of a 1908 New York
to Paris auto race, which was the inspiration for the 1965 comedy film "The
Great
Race" (which ironically Wynn would later appear in). Wynn's spot is the
first riotously
funny celeb spot in a while where the members of the panel have to do impressions
of another member. Thus, we get to see Betsy impersonate Bill, Bill as Betsy,
Jayne as Henry and Henry as Jayne. 9535 DV-659
320) 7/23/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Betty White
Guest: Steve Lawrence This show involves each of the panelists quietly leaving
after each of their questioning segments so that by show's end Garry is the
only one
left. Those who recall the early days of GSN will recognize the ending where
Garry
is told they've got a minute left and he says, "This spot was supposed
to take us to
the end of the show!" because that clip was used in the promos that involved
reminscing
by game show personalities about the good old days. Also, the first contestant
is memory
expert Harry Lorayne who memorizes the names and faces of 500 people in the
audience. Lorayne proved to be a popular guest in the mode of personalities
like
The Amazing Kreskin throughout the sixties and seventies. I doubt this was his
first
foray into TV because he seemed so polished, but he had a spot of trouble at
times.
He was a favorite of talk shows like Mike Douglas' and appeared on TV shows
into
the 1990's, even appearing on "What Would You Do?" with Marc Summers.
9535 DV-659
321) 7/30/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guests: Mark Goodson and Margaret O'Brien, and another contestants
include a man whose pet squirrel has its own fur coat 9540 DV-659
322) 8/13/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Betty White
Guest: Fernando Lamas - First spot involves the designers of the new
postage stamps reflecting the recent raises to 4 cents, and 7 cents for air
mail. Second spot is a classic example of a live TV spot going awry! A
submerged diver is supposed to communicate with Garry while the panel is
blindfolded, but the communication device is all fouled up as Garry is asking
for his name. Fortunately they get it fixed and the spot doesn't get blown 9540
DV-659
323) 8/20/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guest: Bob Crosby - First guest is a man who beat a horse in a race.
Complicated but funny secret involving panel ultimately singing the
Winston jingle (badly) one note at a time 9551 DV-692
324) 9/3/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guests: Louis Nye, Don Knotts, and Tom Poston 9551 DV-692
325) 9/10/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guests: Durwood Kirby of the zaniest IGAS in a while with Durward's secret of
singing
in a bathtub taken from Betsy's house and Garry getting wet in the process.
Then Garry
finds himself surrounded by 38 animals on stage in the closing bit and when
picking
up a wombat, it has an accident and Garry keep in mind is still in bare feet
because of
the bathtub bit. Very funny! 9554 DV-692
326) 9/17/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guests: Mickey Rooney 9554 DV-692
327) 9/24/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Betty White
Guests: Art Linkletter 9559 DV-692
328) 10/1/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guests: Roy Rogers in a Western Themed Show 9559 DV-692
329) 10/13/54 Panel: Bill Cullen, Faye Emerson, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
The first contestant, Mr. X comes in -- his secret is that he was the doctor
who
delivered Faye. Halfway through everything comes unglued, ironically by Faye's
question about the sex of the participants, and Garry blurts out to the audience
that the
doctor couldn't have been of the same sex as the mother and daughter. Second
up was a
group of past Olympic champions including Dick Button and Jesse Owens. A priceless
comment by Garry here while discussing the Berlin games with Owens, that Jesse
obviously did better than Adolph Hitler since Jesse was still successful and
"nobody's
heard from Hitler for quite some time now". Guest star Boris Karloff, who
had been the
very first celebrity to appear on IGAS when it debuted in 1952, has chosen 4
ladies at
random from the audience to take part in a screaming contest while the panel
is
blindfolded. 9563
330) 10/8/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guest: William Bendix 9572 DV-692
331) 10/15/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guests: Children of Famous People - included are the children of the What's
My Line?
Panel - Peter Gabel, Jonathan Cerf, and Kerry Koolmar. Dana Andrews' son David,
Harold Lloyd's Son Duke and William Bendix's Daughter Lorraine,
and all six of Sam Levenson's brothers. 9572 DV-692
332) 10/29/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows

333) 11/5/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Jayne Meadows
Guest: Walter Slezak 9575 DV-730
334) 11/12/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Mary Healy
Guest: Peter Lind Hayes Second guest is the 83 year old grandson of
President John Tyler, who was President from 1841-45. Peter's secret is a
funny one involving reading bad jokes that Bill Cullen had written for radio
shows fifteen years before 9592 DV-730
335) 12/3/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Peggy Cass, Henry Morgan, and Mrs. Dorothy
Ellington
Guest: Pat Boone 9592 DV-730
336) 12/10/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Bess Myerson, Henry Morgan, and Kathryn Grant
Guest: Jackie Cooper 9598 DV-730
337) 12/17/58 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Donna Reed
Guests: Arthur Godfrey and boxing great Jersey Joe Walcott. 9598 9732 DV-730
338) 1/7/59 Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Bess Myerson
Guests: Sal Mineo.
Since Sal is filming "The Gene Krupa Story", the panel has a drumming
competition,
unbeknownst to them judged by Gene Krupa. Introduced on this episode is a new
type
of super adhesive that can support over 10,000 pounds after thirty minutes of
bonding. To
demonstrate it, Garry is suspended in midair, held by one drop of glue. It would
take
another ten or more years to produce a consumer version 9599 DV-730 DV-5079
339) 1/14/59 Panel: Bill Cullen, Eydie Gorme, Henry Morgan, and Bess Myerson
Guests: Andy Griffith,
The First Two Men Who Tried To Fly Across The Atlantic Ocean In A Balloon,
Jack Moseley of Long Beach, California appears with the secret that he is going
to inflate an automobile inner tube with his mouth until it bursts. It's an
intriguing proposition, and
fascinating to watch. So Jack takes his position center stage, carrying a flaccid
rubber tube, and
begins to blow into it as the panel watches. The studio audience watches. And
the folks
at home watch as, with the stage lights down, Moseley turns intriguing shades
of grey (black
and white, remember). The panel watches on tenterhooks, anticipating the big
blow.
Chester Feldman is urging Garry to stop the bit, but Garry resists. Andy Griffith
finally
shows up after a reluctantly-taken Winston break, drawling "I wanna see
'er bust!" and sacrificing
his spot to watch Moseley's struggle. Finally, the thing explodes and the audience
gives him a wild
ovation. This is live TV at its most unpredictable, and it's Garry's steadfast
refusal to give the bit
up that makes this one of IGAS' best-remembered segments. 9599 DV-762

incident where
Ali hit him with an alleged "phantom punch", then after confusion
that saw Liston get up
and resume fighting it was ruled that he'd been out more than ten seconds and
the fight
was over. To this day many believe that Liston took a dive because of his mob
connections,
though Ali insists he landed a quick punch that many didn't see. This fight
was also
memorable for Robert Goulet screwing up the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner
and
getting booed in the process. In fact, Goulet had been the Mystery Guest on
WML just
before the fight and talked about how nervous he was about performing it and
hoped he
wouldn't foul up! Panel: Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Bess Myerson

week and replaced
by a member from last week's studio audience. Johnny Olson is out in the audience

mike for audience members to ask questions of the first guest, a man who has
the names
of hotels, restaurants and theaters in every large town in America memorized.

373) 9/9/59 Guest: Robert Q. Lewis Panel : Bill Cullen, Bess Myerson, Henry
Morgan,
and Betsy Palmer Hey, all you hop cats, Robert Q. Lewis has gone beatnik on
us! He's been a
quiet observer of the beat movement, especially with the poetry recitations
of Allen Ginsburg and Jack Kerouac, so he's decided to spring the newest beat
poet on the public: Howlin'
Henry Morgan. The panel is forced to wear berets and dark glasses (with goatees
for
the men) and speak hip talk, and Garry urges them "You got to make the
scenery." With Norman's trio backing (and possibly Chester Feldman as timekeeper
on the bongos?)
Henry recites one of the poems from his recent album "The Saint and the
Sinner"
in the same high-velocity style of the beat poets. 9747 DV-873

the film "Body and
Soul"), and puts Garry through the same training regimen He then trots
out two sparring
partners, for himself, Whitey Ford, and for Garry, Joe Louis. (In an odd note,
the version
Gazzara made was never released.) As a bonus, Bill's dye ran on his blindfold.
At the end
of the show Garry is surprised on the eve of the second season of his Tuesday
night variety
show with a giant cake with a special filling...dear old Marion Lorne. 9758

share the same
birthdate -- February 24. Zsa Zsa Gabor wears a sack dress -- literally, made
from a potato sack.
The final guest is John Cage (1912-1992), then a twenty-five year veteran of
classical
recordings who in 1960 released the album "Cartridge Music". This
album featured classical
music played on household objects in a regimented order. On this live performance
he used
such varied items like a vase of roses, iron pipes, duck calls, five portable
radios, and more
items. One of the more interesting aspects of his performance is that the two
unions couldn't
agree on who had jurisdiction to plug in the five radios, so Cage had to improvise
by merely
hitting the radios. Panel: Bill Cullen, Bess Myerson, Henry Morgan, and Betsy

and makes
his first hosting job of the show since 1957. Watching Bill struggle being thrust

and Betsy Palmer 9941 DV-1068
423) 10/19/60 This one is Chock full of historical import. Under a bushel for
42 years, and not
unleashed on the public again until now. One of the show's all-time classic
secrets: a young
man has the secret, "I collected 40 different bugs for a science project".
His brother's secret:
"I ate them all." That's charming in and of itself, but the kid, who
can't be more than one year
old, is enraptured by the audience's reactions and makes all sorts of goofy
faces. The panel
is basically unable to continue the game because of this kid. Then comes the
man who hit
arguably the most famous home run in World Series history, Bill Mazeroski. His
seventh
inning blast gave the Pittsburgh Pirates the world title over the New York Yankees.
He
gives the Pittsburgh boy a team autograph baseball, and Bill says "You
made me very happy
last week." There's also a plug in there for the fourth and final of the
Kennedy-Nixon debates,
so Arlene Francis sets up a battle of the sexes debate with her as moderator:
"I want you to
think of me as a cross between Edward R. Murrow and Tallulah Bankhead."
There's plenty
of referencing to the previous debates, when Henry prefaces his comments with
one of Nixon's
old mantras, "I want to make one thing perfectly clear." Then Bill
almost singlehandedly brings
down the house when he lets Betsy talk out of turn while he checks the lighting
(a reference
to Nixon, who may or may not have been photographed properly or eschewed makeup,
appearing to make him look unshaven and washed out). Still in Tricky Dick mode,
he
then tells Arlene "I was talking about this with my wife last night."
Arlene asks "Your wife Pat?"
and Bill shoots back without a beat, "What she does on her time is her
own business!"
Incredible stuff. Panel: Bill Cullen, Bess Myerson, Henry Morgan, and Betsy
Palmer 9941 DV-1068
424) 10/26/60. Odd how this one is timed, since this is the week for many TV
series' season-ending
cliffhangers. After leading the panel though a movie cliffhanger quiz, John
Payne creates
a cliffhanger of his own, with Henry Morgan strapped to a massage table with
a circular
saw blade heading toward him, looking to cut him in half. When Garry asks how
he's
gonna get out of that scrape, John replies, "I don't know...I never thought
of that." So
tune in next week as Gisele MacKenzie tries to save him. Panel: Bill Cullen,
Bess Myerson,
Henry Morgan, and Betsy Palmer 9941 DV-1124

434) 1/19/61 Becomes "We've Got A Secret" as the panel plays tricks
on themselves and Garry
to celebrate Garry's birthday. Another Garry Moore... complete with bowtie,
crewcut
and Jan 31st birthday...is introduced as host as a bewildered Garry joins the
panel. Bill
plays a violin(for the first time in his life), Betsy plays the piano(for the
first time in public)
and both sing a duet. The erstaz Mr Moore apparently mispronounced, forgot or
said a
different brand during the first commercial, prompting Henry to say "WIN-STON!"'.
Bess 'Merryson' and Durwood Kerby portray "Martha and Jenny" in a
sketch, and the
stagehands get the last laugh by putting scotch into Durwood's onstage 'scotch'.
Henry
Morgan dances a ballet with an apparently famous Ballerina Julianna, and Garry
is
given a birthday cake complete with joke candles.

the
Reagan bit as part of the effort to get Steve Allen to break up while doing
radio announcer

was
most likely the future President's last ever appearance on a game show
Panel: Steve Allen, Bess Myerson, Henry Morgan, and Betsy Palmer 9995 DV-1166

456) 7/19/61 The first guest is intriguing: he's basically a human echo, who
can repeat anything
anyone says in the same intonation as they do, in any language, nearly simultaneously.
Jack E. Leonard demonstrates a party game called "Ha"! with the panel
lying on a rug,
heads to stomachs, and it always evokes laughter. The game is demonstrated by
staff
members including that old Bronco Buster himself, Roger Peterson. Then the panel
plays it.
And you know what? It worked! Bess Myerson can't control herself, and since
Betsy is out,
they enlsited that old time cackler, Carol Burnett, to stand in...a wise choice.
Finally and
reluctantly, Henry takes his place, and the audience cackles when they see his
shoes -
complete with buckles. But the big payoff comes when the game actually starts:
the
person on the bottom of the line says "Ha". Then the next says "Ha
ha". The third says "Ha
ha ha". And so on down the line. Soon everyone -- Bill, Carol, Bess, Pat
McCormick,
Irma Reichert, Roger, everyone in the line - is laughing hysterically -- everyone,
that is,
except you-know-who! Panel: Bill Cullen, Bess Myerson, Henry Morgan, and Carol
Burnett 10050 DV-1250

would
of course hit his 61 that year) The celebrity spot featured for the second week
an ex-panelist,
Jayne Meadows, computer-dating a full decade before it was fashionable. Bess

Arnold Grant.

out mug shot
kits in a spot that William Bendix would bring back a couple of years later.
A woman is the
anchor guest and will sit on a flagpole-like conveyance in the theater until
Monday's show.
