"Hey Tom, how do you make VASL maps?"

I get that question about 3 times a week, which is actually pretty gratifying. In the belief that, for every person out there who asks the question, there must be another one who'd like the answer but doesn't ask the question, I'll post the answer.

There's a Yahoo Group called vaslmapcabal whose purpose in life is to share information about making VASL maps. All of the classic VASL Map Cabal members are there to answer questions and bring up the Young Breed of Cabaleers while sitting around the frat house eating cold pizza, drinking Yoo Hoo, and debating the merits of Jeri Ryan vs. Jessica Alba.

Auxiliary VASL topics are fair game as well, such as auto-LOS generation, Lars Thuring's JASL, David Sullivan's CASL, making VASL counters, suggestions for VASL improvements, and Sandra Bullock. Basically, if you love computers, maps, AI, and ASL, you'd make a good Cabaleer. There's over 100 (!) people in the VMC's Yahoo Group right now, and that's just cool as all get-out.

There are many good resources in the Files section of this Yahoo group, including the Ye Olde Booke of VASL Mapmaking Secrets (the YoB). Recommended Reading for the would-be mapboard maker.

This part of my website used to be devoted to my own (TR) maps, but the Young Guns at the VASL Map Cabal have been churning out their own beauties, so this forum is now a showcase of their talents too.

Click on the mini-board in the right-hand column to see the full-size map. Click on the "VASL map" link to download a .zip file of the VASL version of that map. Note that some maps have not been tweaked to take full advantage of all of VASL's terrain-changing properties.

Db1 - Ian Daglish's Bocage board 1.

Unlike me, Ian has actually been to Normandy and knows what real Bocage looks like.

Featuring Ian's take on a Bocage Village.

DP1 - Don Petros' board 1 (drawn by Steve Swann).

Don's first take on a crossroads village, with some ingenious "cultivated woods" around U3 and elsewhere.

DP2 - Don Petros' board 2 (drawn by Robert Richmond).

Don's vision of an open country board with a smaller village.

F1 - Klaus Fischer's board 1

A village on two adjacent wooded hills separated by a bridge over a stream. Gorgeous.

F2 - Klaus Fischer's board 2

Companion to F1, more village on a wooded hill with a stream cutting through.

F4 - Klaus Fischer's board 4

Where's board F3? We dunno. In the meantime, feast your eyes on Klaus' urban railyard board. OOOH. AAAAAH.

F5 - Klaus Fischer's board 5

A Factory-laden Railyard transitioning into rural. Featuring a Tunnel around D5 and a Switchyard thing in V7. Wow.

GM1 - Gordon Molek's Last Hurrah

Gordon's last act as Czar of the VASL Map Cabal was to draw this kicky hilltop village by the river. Love the Boulevard hex in the middle of town!

PP1 - Pablo Perez's board PP1

Very tempting to call this the "Deliverance Board", with the river running through the narrow gorge. I would hate to have to own hex P7 in order to win. Very nice take on the narrow river board running through hills and farmland.

RER1 - Robert Richmond's board 1

In the style of board 18 with rolling hills framing a scary-looking valley road from R2 to FF5 and a nicely-done Gully on the western half. That's a Ford in G2.

Steve's answer to the question of "What does good Tank Country look like?".

TR1 - Tom's First Board.

Reminiscent of one of the old Panzer Leader boards, with a chateau at one end and a little village framed by low hills on the other. In the middle, probably the biggest lake you'll ever see in ASL.

TR2 - The Ohio Map.

Taking me back to my misspent youth in Ohio, where there's plenty of rough brushy terrain shot through with short Gullies. The farms on the east side of the map are separated by barbed wire.

TR3 - Craggy Hill & PTO Village.

Featuring a waterfall in L6 and a peaceful valley where an old man lives in the hut in N4, fishing in the stream and groovin' on the wind through the orchard trees. The hill on the eastern side is supposed to be the kind of rocky, craggy terrain you'd see in Korea. I'm especially fond of the bridge over the 2-level gorge in AA7. Somebody's gotta design a scenario to blow that bridge, and I wanna play it!

TR4 - The Railyard board.

This place is definitely Russia, or perhaps Idaho, where the ever-pervasive hand of Party Planning can be seen throughout the layout of this small industrial rail center on the steppes.

This map is just screaming out for some "Finn/Partisan vs Russian" type scenarios. Hit-and-run raids to blow the storage tanks, set fire to the rail engine machine shop, or torch the factory. Stick an open steppe board or a forest board on either side, wait for darkness to fall, and you're good to go.

TR5 - The Bocage Map.

The western half of the map is your basic Kindergarten Bocage, with large-ish farms nicely separated by country-width roads. The Tavern is in O6/O7, where the locals gather to sip les brewskis and pass secret notes to each other about the weekly Maquis meeting.

The eastern half of the map is Serious Bocage, where you get Narrow Lanes running through small farms. There's also a Bocage-ish kind of village, with your obligatory walled Church area. That stripey-kind of terrain like in C2 is a Vineyard.

TR6 - Steppe Village.

This is my idea of what a "village at a crossroads" should look like. We're thinking "only village within 50 klicks on the Ukraine" here.

TR7 - Rolling Hills.

This is a take-off on board 18, with a bit more stuff going on. The main idea is the ridge lines and rolling hills. Tank Country with a lot of places for the enterprising infantryman to do his stuff too, particularly around the many choke points. I especially like the double-crestlines around the Level 2 hills, funneling vehicle movement while not providing a free lunch for the defenders - none of those juicy concealment terrain hexes overlooking the whole mapboard here. If you wanna shoot AT 'em, you're gonna have to shag some shells yourself.

TR8 - PTO River Board.

Hey, if board 47 can be the PTO Valley Board, then we might as well do a PTO River Board, right?
