Management Proposes a ‘Dream Bid’

SJ Priority Mail from the L&DC Coming Here Sept. 12

At the labor-management meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 26, management announced that the SJ P&DC will begin processing South Jersey Priority Mail from the L&DC effective Saturday, September 12. Management has determined it needs 26 additional positions to handle this new incoming mail.

The 26 new positions are all on Tour 1 and Tour 3 – and almost all of them have weekend drop days. The new jobs will be at the APPS, the Platform and in First-Class Break-Up. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Tour 1, Level 4: 10 positions
  • Tour 1, Level 5: 2 positions
  • Tour 3, Level 4: 6 positions
  • Tour 3, Level 5: 8 positions

Management said it would like to create residual vacancies by conducting a “dream bid.” That’s where all the mail handlers in the SJ P&DC bid on whichever job they want, including the 26 new positions. Whichever jobs are left over – the residuals – would be offered to excessed employees from other facilities. At this time, Postal management said it cannot increase the number of career employees it has in the SJ P&DC until residual vacancies are available. Therefore, it would be looking to increase the number of casual workers to 12 percent of the current employee complement to help handle the mail until the residual vacancies are filled. Management already employs 16 casuals here. It would be looking to double that number.

The union will meet with management to discuss this further on Monday, Aug. 31.
