Mail Handlers' Union Meeting Postponed!

Union Waiting for Requested Information

The June 2 all-members union meeting has been postponed until management provides the union with descriptions of the new bid jobs. "We want to be able to answer members' questions but we're still missing vital information. For now we don't have anything to report, other than what's already been posted on the bulletin board," said Tony Branco, branch president.

The only news is that management will not have the new bid jobs ready for reposting on June 8, as it had originally intended. But it still wants to complete the bidding by July 4.

Branco explains that the union needs to do a side-by-side comparison of every single job - looking at how the old job is written against how the new job will be written - so it can determine whose job is being affected and what the impact will be. "This is a very important step and the union will not be rushed to meet some arbitrary deadline," he said.

As soon as we receive the requested information and have had a chance to study it, we'll reschedule the union meeting so we can share that information with you. Our plan still is to follow up the union meeting with another one as soon as the new bid jobs become available. We want to be able to help members complete the jobs package. (All mail handlers will have to complete a bid sheet on which they'll indicate their first choice, their second choice, and so on. All bidding will be done manually: You will not be able to bid by telephone or via the Internet.)
