Restoring Our Biblical and Constitutional Foundations

In addition to a love of Israel and a love for seeing people be well, I also love the United States and entertain the deep-seated conviction that it cannot endure as a free Republic unless those entrusted with the powers of government keep their oaths to support its Constitution. Perhaps something I say or do may prompt others toward the preservation of the Constitution and our God-given freedoms.

These freedoms are in mortal danger in United States. Politically powerful groups of citizens are obsessed by the foolish notion that what they deem to be evil can be cured by the federal government. Eager to appease them, the federal government has given us too much government. When confronted with its folly, the members of the federal bureaucracy emulate the example of the persons invited to the great supper mentioned in Luke 14: "They all with one consent began to make excuse."

Because government cannot do many things well, too much government is always bad government. Thomas Jefferson once said that if we were "directed from Washington when to sow and when to reap we should soon be without bread." The federal government has compounded its offense in recent years by ignoring the Constitution, which is the most precious instrument of government the world has ever known.

Martin Luther, as a German reformer, once said:

"If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at the moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages there the loyalty of the soldier is proved. And to be steady on all the battle fields besides is merely flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point."

Clearly the battle is raging all around us. Over 40 million babies have been murdered in United States. Oregon has passed a law legalizing doctor-assisted suicide. Homosexuals are demanding they be allowed to have sex with children. Children are taught that they must accept sinful, immoral lifestyles. Secular intolerance attacks religious liberty with increasing vigor. People go through life expecting the government to supply all their needs. United States citizens are willing to sacrifice their unalienable rights for "security." Doing things in concert with other nations bodes of a one-world government looming on the horizon. Clearly, biblical Christianity is in for some very hard times.

One of the greatest falsehoods in the church today is the assumption that because a person is involved in ministry he is exempted from being involved in his society. This lie is sure to keep most Christians from "confessing Christ where the battle rages." Such apathy is totally contrary to the values that made this nation great in the first place. The fact that I am a Christian makes me more determined to do what I can in these days that are crucial to the very survival of our Republic.

Above all, we must follow Scripture, our only infallible guide. Even as we take the spiritual battle into the market place of ideas, we must never forget that earthly measures can easily hide the real issue: sin and the need for faith in Jesus the Messiah.

Although the Christian will never use the state as a tool of conversion, he will always resist the efforts of people to purge public life of Christian influence. It is my conviction that Christian values still have a contribution to make to our society, especially in defining the proper role of government.

It is my sincere desire that the essays and links on in this section of our website will motivate believers to stand up for the proper role of civil government, which is never to manage society as if the state were omnipotent, but to allow greater freedoms for individuals, families, and civic institutions so that they can flourish without unnecessary restraint from secular authority.  For further information on this subject, please visit The Reading Room and Columns & Essays on Freedom.
