Articulate and ColdFusion gotcha

First, a brief background: Today I attempted to publish my Articulate preso to our company intranet. Our intranet allows different business units to manage content in their own directory. Let's say I create the file mypage.html under our directory, then browse to it. Magically, the corporate "wrapper" with graphics and navigation elements appears around my page. In order to break out of the intranet wrapper, I must change my filename to a CFM template as mypage.cfm. Then I move this page to a new subdirectory, and also create a new Application.cfm file, with only a dummy application name. Now mypage.cfm displays only what's inside, no wrapping occurs!

Segway this "intranet intro" to my Articulate content publishing task, where I have my file player.html, and 2 directories (data and player). I move these 3 elements to my newly created subdirectory, with the dummy Application.cfm. Next, I changed the filename to player.cfm (not .html). When I browse to the page, it appears blank! Where the heck is my Articulate Flash preso? It plays just fine when I browse my computer's file system to the player.html file. The issue is that some of the HTML comments that Articulate generated when I published are not proper. Most web folks know that a basic html comment looks like <!-- my html comment here -->. However, Articluate included extra dashes, for example this line.
<!-------- Articulate Presenter Lives In Here ---------------------------
Well, the ColdFusion engine thinks anything with 3 dashes (or more) is the beginning of a CFML comment, which take the form of <!--- my cfml comment here --->. So as you can see, Articulate's comments should have followed the standard HTML format and not used extra dashes! The fix is to change the above line to start with only 2 dashes, it becomes:
<!-- Articulate Presenter Lives In Here ---------------------------
There are a few other places in the player.cfm file to make this change. Once you fix them all, save the file, and browse to it again. Whalla, the Articulate Flash preso now plays in your browser, problem solved!!!

Netflix (DVD rentals) blog

I've been a Netflix member coming up on 4 years now (Dec 2001). I've managed to get a few friends converted during this time, it truly is the best postal mail rental service hands down. On the internet there's a great blog called Hacking Netflix that I read about once a month. The guy has thoughtful insights about a variety of topics around the DVD rental business. I need to start reading it more often, as I have many posts to catch up on when I don't get to the sight as frequently. Today I also added it to my blog's favorite links, check it out for a good read.

JUBILEE

I was going through some digital pictures tonight and came across this one taken after a game of Scrabble. I spelled the word JUBILEE, and scored a whoping 72 points! That was the most points I've ever scored for one word. The J was on a double letter for 16, and the tiles were on a triple word, bringing me to 72. I think that word alone helped me win against my mother-in-law Karen.

Ben's first State Fair

Ben had a great time at his first State Fair on Friday. We were met with some light rain/mist in the morning, but soon the sky opened and it was sunny and warm. We had our family caricature drawn and airbrushed by Bonnie's friend, Kathy - we highly recommend getting one from her. Ben liked the Merry-Go-Round ride with mom and I got some great pictures. We ate plenty of food, including cotton candy which Ben seemed to like tastes of. We even got to share some of our day with Dan who was visiting from Arizona. Ben was so wired that he only napped for 1 hour the entire day and still managed to stay up until his normal 8pm bedtime. All in all it was a fun-filled day, and we're already looking forward to next year!

The Office is back tonight

My favorite show from last season was The Office. Tonight there are 4 straight episodes on NBC. They only made 6 shows last season to test the waters, so this is a great way to catch most of them. The show originated in the UK, and is hilarious. If you like the movie Office Space and the cartoon Dilbert, you'll love this show. Tune in at 7pm Central!

Sidney's uptown closed

We drove down Hennepin in uptown on Saturday night and noticed Sidney's restaurant was closed. The one time I ate there I really enjoyed myself, the food was good and there was a large variety. I found their website (a poorly made site I might add) and it looks like they still have the other locations open. I can't find any mention of when/why the uptown spot closed. Hopefully their other locations stay open, as it's a nice place for a casual-upscale bite to eat.

Poor help from sears.com

I'm trying to figure out a pretty basic task - changing the oil on my Craftsman lawn mower. I've lost my product manual, so I figured I would easily find the answer on the sears.com website - WRONG! Here is my complete unhelpful email thread from customer service. It's so generic and "answering machine" like. I beg to know why big companies by now still are not using the internet to its fullest capacity to attempt to keep their customers happy?

Ben creeping and crawling

Ben is officially on the move and has been for about 3 solid weeks now. In just the past week he's also mastered standing by holding the coffee table or couch and pulling himself upright. He also figured out the stairs and crawls all the way to the top on his own. You still need to be right behind him just in case, as he fell back in my arms on one occasion this past weekend. Ben's walking is just around the corner.

Golfed at Elm Creek

I played with Matt K. at Elm Creek in Plymouth on Saturday. I don't think I have ever played there and I did ok. Usually my first time at a new course is a disaster. The course was tougher to walk than we anticipated, and it was a hot day, so it was quite a workout. Next time we definately need a power cart. Some of the holes are tight when driving, and slope such that your ball rolls to the side. That leaves you with a blind, uphill shot going at the green. I made one birdie and had a few pars and finished with an 89. It could have been a few less had I not rushed a couple short 2' putts. Overall, not one of my favorite courses, but I'd play it again as the cost was decent and we'd use a cart next time.
