Nightmare on Elm Street

Dutch Elm disease
Originally uploaded by webdh.
Dutch Elm Disease (DED) took out 3 elm trees in our yard this summer. We hired our neighbor down the road who does tree work to remove them all. These two were the worst loss, as they provided wonderful shade in the evening on the west side of our house over the deck. What a bummer.

Don't buy tickets at StubHub!!!

Unless you want to get scammed big time or are desperate for tickets to a killer event, NEVER buy at stubhub.com. My wife was kind enough to get me some Twins tickets for my birthday, bless her soul. However, for some reason she started her ticket search at Google, instead of going directly to TwinsBaseball.com. Huge mistake! She bought 2 lower left field tickets for a grand total of $77.95.

You may wonder, how did 2 tickets with $19 face value come to $78? I called StubHub and spoke to Chris in customer service. Apparently we bought these tickets from a broker out of California, not even a local fan who was selling their seats. Here is the breakdown.
Seller's price = $30.00 per ticket
Stub Hub 10% buy fee = $6.00
FedEx shipping = $11.95

This is robbery! They are preying on foolish ticket buyers. First, how can these seats be $11 over face value for an Oakland A's game? How can it cost $12 to ship 2 paper tickets that would fit in a normal envelope? Not only that, we didn't get any coupons for the DQ Family Pack. For the special, just purchase a Home Run Porch ticket for $19 to any Saturday game and receive:
• FREE Papa John's Pizza
• FREE soft drink
• FREE Dairy Queen Blizzard Flavor Treat with purchase of a Blizzard

Ok, I had to vent about this. Hopefully we'll enjoy a good ballgame and life will go on.

Cooling down the Global Warming debate

I'm always skeptical of what I hear from the liberal left. Most relevant today is Al Gore and his "Gorebal Warming" scare he is pushing down our throats. You rarely hear about the other side of the story from the mass media TV/newspapers. Therefore, I tend to get fresh ideas and perspectives from talk radio, and today I heard some excellent contradictions by James M. Taylor on AM1500 during the Bob Davis show.

After visiting globalwarmingheartland.org, where a number of articles written by Taylor are posted, I found my way to another blog. The Heartland Institute (their mission is to discover and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems. Such solutions include parental choice in education, choice and personal responsibility in health care, market-based approaches to environmental protection, privatization of public services, and deregulation in areas where property rights and markets do a better job than government bureaucracies) has an excellent blog, and here is the link to their category of Global Warming entries.

Don't let yourself be pulled in only one direction of this "hot" debate that will shape our country's future economy and impact on the environment.
