Advanced AT Backpacking Trip Shenandoah National Park

 Oct 24-25, 2009

This is a trip for those who have experience backpacking with a full backpack and camping in the backcountry.  There is no lower age limit but generally boys 13 and up can handle the pace of this trip best.  We will depart the Church Saturday at 7 AM and drive to Front Royal, VA and the SNP.  We will stop at Dickeys Ridge Visitors Center to get our Backcountry Permit and then park at Compton Gap.  We will hike to the Gravel Springs Hut on the Appalachian Trail, camping at or near the hut and returning on Sunday via the Bluff and Mt. Marshall Trails, with a possible side trip on Big Devils Stairs.  Total trail mileage is 16 to 18 miles.  We will return on Sunday and be back to Church by 4 PM. Bring your own lunch for Saturday and Sunday, simple, quick breakfast for Sunday, and dinner for Saturday.  Bring water and snacks. We will discuss all of the arrangements at the meetings on 10/12 and 10/19.  This will be a great trip! If you need any equipment see me at the meetings.

Mr McNitt is leading a 9 mile trip the same weekend for less experienced backpackers.

AT Backpacking Trip Annapolis Rocks and Pogo Campsite

Oct 24-25, 2009

We will depart the Church Saturday at 7 AM and drive to Rte 40 parking lot at AT to park. Hike up to Annapolis Rocks for lunch. Continue on to Pogo Campground to camp. There is a spring at Pogo for water.  Can use chemicals to treat the water. Return on Sunday. Back to Church by 4 PM. Total trail mileage about 9 miles.  Bring your own breakfast (just add hot water) and lunch and snacks. Mr. McNitt will provide dinner for the scouts to carry (leave room in your pack!). Should cost about $5 per person.  He has a bunch of dehydrated veggies, beans, and rice and with a spice kit we will make a killer soup. We will make macaroni and cheese (just add tuna!).  We will bake a cake with the backpacking stove as well.  This will be a great trip! If you need a backpack see Mr. Lauer or Mr. McNitt. The troop can lend you a backpack.

Mr McDowell is leading a 20 mile trip the same weekend for experienced backpackers.
