It
takes a lot of adult support to run a Troop as active as ours. For every visible volunteer there are probably two or more in the
background. We have excellent
parent participation, but because of attrition and the annual influx of new
Scouts, more help is always needed. The
more we have, the less each has to do, and the following list of roles
should help potential volunteers to fit their skills to our needs.
Troop
Committee
The troop committee meets once per month.
Establishes Troop policies.
Handles administration. Sets
budget. Supports advancement,
outdoor, and fund raising programs. Members
sign up as adult Scouters. Assume
specific responsibilities as designated by Chairman.
Orientation

operation, finances, parental involvement, etc.
Meetings to take place during troop meetings usually or in home of
new Scouts. Manager will
coordinate committee members and leaders.

records for each Scout. File
advancement reports. Order and
prepare awards. Coordinate
Boards of Review. Attends most
troop meetings at least briefly. Works
closely with Assistant Scoutmaster in charge of Advancement.
Quartermaster

Quartermaster to advise/coach him on the management and care of all troop
equipment and Troop storage area.
Treasurer

finances. Pay all bills.

Inform leaders of Scouts behind in payments.
Provide up to date records for Troop meetings.
Secretary

Committee Meetings.

maintaining attendance records on Scouts for all Troop activities.

polish, & add a little flair for publication.

refreshments at Courts of Honor, Anniversary dinner, and other Troop
functions where refreshments are desired.
Arrange for use of church and kitchen as necessary.
Summer

Outdoors
Chairman (Camp master)
Make all arrangements for transportation, camping
sites, & tour permits. Work
closely with adult leaders.
Special
Activities Coordinator
Coordinate non-camping, non-fundraising special
activities such as service projects and day trips.
"Friends
Of Scouting" Chairman
Work alone or with others to contact all troop
families concerning contributions to the Council's "Friends of
Scouting" campaign. Attend
campaign kick-off briefing for the troop.
Receive contributions and send to Council.
Fund
Raiser Chairman
Individuals to coordinate all efforts for one of the
various troop fundraisers, such as popcorn sales.
One chairman with assistants as needed for each.
Merit
Badge Counselors
Are you skilled or knowledgeable enough in any of the
merit badge subjects to coach a Scout through the requirements for that
badge? This is a way many
people can help Scouts from the entire community.
Yet experience shows that any one counselor is contacted only
occasionally by a Scout. You
work with Scouts on a one-to-one basis.
Perhaps you may deal with a small group of Scouts in a given time
period for instruction, but final counseling is one-to-one.
Brief Training is available on procedures.
Ask for an application to sign up.
Special
Skills, Special Resources, Special "In"
Do you have some special skill or hobby that might be
useful to the troop? Do you
have access to some type of resource or an "in" of which we might
take advantage? Make note of it
on a Personal Resource Survey form. These
things can be as helpful as your personal time in making the Troop program
work better.
