Charlie was an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 3 who passed
away in 1999 after a courageous battle with cancer. He became
involved with Troop 3 in 1986 when his son Jason became a
Boy Scout.
Charlie served as Assistant Scoutmaster for over 10 years, long after
Jason went on to join the Navy. He loved the outdoors, camping,
hiking, and most of all fishing.
Mr. Austin was always there to lend
a Scout a hand with setting up a tent, learning a new knot, catching
a fish, or listening to a good story. His patience and good humor were
always welcome at the end of a long hike or a full day at summer camp.
Charlie resided in Monroe Township for most of his life. He worked for
PSE&G for 30 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with
the Seabees. He was married to Janet for 29 years and was father to
Joe and Jason.
Since 2000, Troop 3 has honored his memory by awarding the "Charles
L. Austin Memorial Campership Award for Scout Spirit" to a deserving
Scout in the Troop.
