Canoeing in Troop 47 Sandwich

Alright, so there have been several ideas we have kicked around the troop and there seems to be a new one coming up every week or so, and another one shot down every other week or so and therefore it seems necessary to me to make a web page explaining where we are now (plus I needed to create a web page for communications merit badge anyway).

Troop Meetings

As spring comes closer there have been ideas to go to several different spots to practice canoeing during a Wednesday troop meeting.  One such place is Scorton Creek.

    Scorton Creek

This is a tidal stream/river/creek that can have a strong current at times but in general would be a good place to start practicing basics.

Another place we have talked about is the Shame Pond in the center of town.

The only problem with this location is getting into it requires bringing the canoes down a steep hill or along a road for a short distance.  Once on the pond however, it has no currents worth noting and is a great spot to start.

Local Camping

Father Sulivan is an extremely popular trip and the location has a pond right there.  It is planned that at the next Father Sulivan trip we will set some canoes in the water and shove off for some requirements for Canoeing Merit Badge.

Ultimate Destinations

There are three possible places I would like to have as a final goal.  The first is a trip on the Matagamon, which is a river in Maine.  This is possibly a week long trip for next summer.

The boundary Waters of Minnesota are another option for this week long trip.  These are a series of lakes and ponds rather than a river.  Because of this there will be many portages.  It will also require a considerable amount of driving.
