Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Giovanni Giacomo GIUMINI4 (1740-1802)

1211. Giovanni Giacomo Giumini4 was born on September 2, 1740, Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. He was apparently named for his paternal grandfather with whom he and his parents lived around the time he was born. His godparents were his maternal uncle, Giovanni Sartori, and Maria Piezzi, perhaps one of his great aunts on his father's maternal side.

Giacomo married Maria Innocenza De Bernardi2 of the town of Broglio, 14 kilometers upriver from Giumaglio. They had at least 11 children, including one set of triplet daughters:

1211A. Giacomo Pietro Francesco Giumini 11 Mar 1759 25 Mar 1759 (14 days)
1211B. Anna Maria Giumini 3 Jun 1760 (> 1799) (> 39)
1211C. Maria Catterina Giumini 10 Nov 1762 (> 1817) (> 54)
1211D. Giacomo Pietro Giumini 2 May 1765 (< 1831) (< 66)
1211E. Maria Maddalena Giumini 17 Sep 1767 23 Mar 1803 (35)
1211F. Maria Margherita Giumini 22 Apr 1770 3 May 1770 (11 days)
1211G. Giovanna Maria Giumini 22 Apr 1770 3 May 1770 (11 days)
1211H. Maria Teresa Giumini5 22 Apr 1770 6 (Dec) 1831 (61)
1211I. Maria Anna Giumini 27 Nov 1772 --  --
1211J. Giovanni Giumini 24 Sep 1776 11 Nov 1776 (1 mos.)
1211K. Maria Apollonia Giumini 10 Mar 1779 16 Nov 1779 (8 mos.)

Giacomo stayed with his mother after his father died, probably in the 1750s, and continued to live with his mother after marrying and starting his family. He likely assumed the family home after her death sometime before 1795.[Cen 1760-1795]

Innocenza was named as the godmother to Giuseppe Giumini, her Giacomo's cousin, twin, in 1758.[Bap 1758] Giacomo was later named as godfather to Anna Maria Gasparini in 1762 and to his first cousin, Giuseppe Maria Sartori in 1764.

The Giumini's first child, Giacomo Pietro Francesco, was born and died during a period when 10 parishioners, 6 of whom were infants, died from an unspecified malady.[Bap 1759, Dth 1759]

On the morning of April 22, 1770, Innocenza gave birth to triplet girls, presumably identical. Margherita, the first named, was in such poor health that she was baptized at home, and not given godparents.[Bap 1770] Both Margherita and the second named, Giovanna, died 11 days later on May 3 and were buried the following day at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1770] Of the three, only Teresia4, our ancestor, survived to adulthood.

Giovanni Giacomo Giumini died on March 22, 1802, at his home in Giumaglio. He was buried the following day in the cemetery next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. He was recorded to be in his 66th year,[Dth 1802] but more likely was 61 years old.

Maria Innocenza (De Bernardi) Giumini died on April 15, 1805, in her home in Giumaglio. She was recorded to be in her 70th year, but was more likely 66 years old. She was also buried in the cemetery next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta the following day.[Dth 1805]
