REEVE(S) Family History

November 2009

Reeve Surname
According to census records, American Reeve families originate in New York and expand to the Mid-West. The surname derives from the Middle English "reeve," the occupation of a bailiff or steward.

The Reeve families trace back to Orange County, New York, about 55 miles northwest of New York City near where New York meets Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Two Seybolt sisters from Otisville married two Reeve gentlement (likely close relatives) and their children migrated to Porter Township, Scioto County, Ohio.

There are Reeve relations to five of seven Seybolt siblings in Orange County, New York:

Siblings?
From this we see that Elisha (Jr.), Elijah, and Abigail could all be siblings, ostensibly by a father named Elisha Reeve (Sr.). Futhermore, Elijah's son Gabriel apparently left a lasting impression on the Mulock and Taylor families.

Elisha REEVE, Jr.1

1. Elisha Reeve, Jr.1 was born between 1755 and 1756. He married Phoebe Seybolt2 on January 3, 1788, in Orange County, New York. They had at least one daughter:

11. Mary "Polly" Reeve2 11 Dec 1796 30 Dec 1870 (74)

By 1800 it appears the Reeve family moved a few miles west to Deerpark, Orange County, and had as many as five daughters and one son.[Cen 1800] Their whereabouts afterward are unknown.

Elijah REEVE (1757-1817)

X. Elijah Reeve was born on September 2, 1757, and may have been a brother of Elisha Jr. and Abigail Reeve. He married Mary SEYBOLT, a german immigrant and sister of Elisha's wife Phoebe (Seybolt) Reeve2, on December 21, 1773, in Otisville, Orange County, New York. They had at least three children:

X2. Katura Reeve 15 Aug 1779 4 Jul 1799 (19)
X3. Frances "Fannie" Reeve 30 Apr 1782 4 Mar 1830 (47)

Mary (Seybolt) Reeve died on August 6, 1783. She was only about 29 years old.

Elijah went on to remarry to Mary Fox in 1786.

Elijah Reeve died on November 26, 1817, at the age of 60.

Abigail REEVE (1761-1832)

Y. Abigail Reeve was born on April 4, 1761, and may have been a sister of Elisha Reeve, Jr. and Elijah Reeve. She married Frederick Seybolt, a brother of Elisha's wife Phoebe (Seybolt) Reeve2, on January 17, 1786, in Goshen, Orange County, New York. They had as many as nine children:

Y9. David Seybolt --  26 Feb 1832 --

Frederick Seybolt died on April 10, 1812, in Otisville, Orange County, New York, and is buried at Mount Hope Plains Cemetery. He was 50 years old.

Cholera?
Tragically, the years 1831 and 1832 saw the deaths of sons Ira and David, and Abigail over a six-month time frame. This could reflect the great cholera outbreak that started many years earlier in India and exploded in England, Ireland, and Ameria in 1831. On the other hand, a review of headstones in the Mount Hope Plains Cemetery does not show an inordinate number of deaths in those years.

Abigail (Reeve) Seybolt died 20 years later on March 26, 1832, in Otisville, and is also buried at Mount Hope Plains Cemetery. She was 70 years old.
