Ira T. WILLIAMS3 (1847-1916)

141. Ira T. WILLIAMS3 was born on April 19, 1847* in Marion County, Indiana, likely in Lawrence Township[Cen 1850] to the northeast of Indianapolis. He fought in the Civil War, as did his father, and later married Elizabeth FLETCHER, also of Indiana. They had at least 13 children, including two sets of fraternal twins:

141L. Harvey Roy WILLIAMS 25 Sep 1885 7 Feb 1947 (58)
141M. Laura WILLIAMS >1900
Birth Year: 1845 or 1847?
Ira's birth date is recorded on his death certificate by his daughter Martha (WILLIAMS) STANDLEY as April 19, 1845[Dth]; however, the 1850, 1860, and 1880 censuses clearly record him as age 3, 13, and 33 respectively, clearly showing he was born in 1847. Furthermore, since his elder sister Elizabeth was born in December 1845, it is even less likely that he was born in April 1845.

Ira T. WILLIAMS enlisted as a private on August 2, 1862 with Company G of the Indiana 70th Regiment Infantry in Indianapolis. At the time, his father was serving in the Northern Virginia Campaign with the Indiana 20th Regiment Infantry. Ira was only 15 years old* at the time of enlistment, although he stated he was 18. He was recorded a resident farmer of Winamac, Pulaski County, Indiana and born in either Hamilton or Marion County, Indiana. He is further described as standing 5'-2" with dark eyes, dark hair, and a dark complexion.

The 70th Indiana mustered in later that month.

After the new year, the 70th advanced on to Kentucky, and Nashville, Tennessee (1863). In May 1864, the 70th Indiana entered the Atlanta Campaign and General SHERMAN's "March to the Sea." Ira was wounded in the face by a shell during a skirmish at Golgotha, Georgia on June 15, 1864. From there the regiment marched on to Savannah, Georgia (December 1864) and then pressed north through South Carolina and into North Carolina. It was while the regiment was resting in Raleigh that General LEE surrendered. The 70th mustered out on June 8, 1865 in Washington, DC.

After the war, Ira and Elizabeth started their family in Indiana by 1870 and soon thereafter moved to Kansas, by the time of their second daughter's birth in 1872. About 1875, and likely prompted by the grasshopper plague of 1874 in Mitchell County, Kansas, they moved west to California and by 1880 settled in Woodland, Yolo County, just west of Sacramento.[Cen 1880]

Ira T. WILLIAMS left his wife for a while in the late 1880s or 1890s, leaving his family behind. According to his granddaughter, Elsie (WILLIAMS) HITCHCOCK, Ira was a womanizer who married more than just the two women we have listed here. Elsie recalls her Aunt Mayme saying she had several step-mothers growing up, but generally avoided talking about her unhappy childhood.

After 1900 he returned and fathered one last daughter, Laura, before wife Elizabeth died from a ruptured gall bladder.

In 1912, Ira was a laborer in the Rincon Precinct of Santa Rosa. He was a registered Republican along with his sons.

Ira later married Harriet (CHAPMAN) FISHER, a widow and mother-in-law to Cora Ethel (MILLER) FISHER-WILLIAMS, his daughter-in-law who married Ira's eldest son, Al WILLIAMS. This marriage perhaps occured around 1915, after Al and Cora's marriage in 1914 and before Ira's death in 1916.

Ira died in Alpine Valley, Sonoma County, California on October 4, 1916 of heart disease and was buried at the Veterans' Home in Yountville, Napa County, California on October 7, 1916. He was 69 years old.*

Grandson Ed WILLIAMS recalls the WILLIAMS family reunited for Christmas, 1933. Attending were Ira's children Al, Mattie, Charlie, Harvey, Mayme, and Laura, as well as their families, including Al's stepchildren Earl FISHER, Pearl MALUGANI, Mildred FECHTER, Carrie HOPPER, Merle FISHER, and Sonoma CLARKE.
