ENERGY STAR'S Change A Light Campaign
A Message from the Town Manager
Dear Residents of Reading,
I have entered our Town of Reading in the “Change a Light, Change the World” campaign. With the effects of global warming already upon us, time is of the essence to reduce our negative impact on our planet. By changing a regular incandescent light bulb to a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), you will reduce your electrical usage by 75% and thereby, reduce the harmful emission of CO2 by 75%.
Congressman John Tierney, who is sponsoring the campaign with the Environmental Protection Agency, stated, “If each household in the thirty-six communities of the 6th District switched just one bulb to an energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamp, we could save over $16 million in energy costs and prevent 137 million pounds of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.”
Bill White of the EPA stated, “With Energy Star rated lights using … less electricity than incandescent bulbs, the average household could save about $60 a year if they replaced five bulbs – plus they last 6 to 10 times as long.” You could double that if you changed ten bulbs. Change them all.
Please help me to put Reading at the top of the list for communities changing to fluorescent light bulbs. You can buy them locally from most stores selling bulbs. They even have them for outside lighting as well as 3-way lighting. Shop around; sales abound. I have changed over 13 lights in my own home, and they are great!
You may register on-line at www.rmld.com. Click on the “Change a Light” scroll and follow directions. Do this for your children and your grandchildren. They deserve a healthy planet. (Call 781-944-7851 to register by phone.)
Sincerely,
Peter Hechenbleikner, Town Manager Vinnie Cameron, General Manager
