Introduction to the 1-2-3 Pledge

We first developed the 1-2-3 Pledge in 2006.  The pledge lists specific Actions we and our neighbors can take to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The pledge is a first small step to raise public awareness about the need to make lifestyle changes that sustain our environmental support structure now and for many generations to come.

Some people may argue that global warming is either not occurring or that it is a natural cycle of the earth and that we shouldn't worry about it.   However, the overwhelming consensus in the scientific community is that global warming is indeed happening and is indeed due to human activity1. We urge you to see two movies that will help you understand this phenomena better: *Too Hot Not to Handle* that played on HBO and *An Inconvenient Truth*.

Some people may worry that while global warming is real and the Earth is indeed getting warmer with each passing decade that there's nothing we can do about it.  The fact is that we already have the technology available to significantly cut our carbon dioxide to levels that we, as a global community, can manage.  What we lack is the will to make it happen.  Members of this committee are working hard to help our community develop solutions to mitigate our impact on global climate.  Will you  join us?  Take the pledge today.

1)  Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.  Climate Change 2001: Synthesis Report
Human activities have increased the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases and aerosols since the pre-industrial era. The atmospheric concentrations of key anthropogenic greenhouse gases (i.e., carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and tropospheric ozone (O3)) reached their highest recorded levels in the 1990s, primarily due to the combustion of fossil fuels, agriculture, and land-use changes (see Table SPM-1).
