Story Page & Web Site Owners

Folks,

I've talked to some of you a lot about this project, others not at all.

But as my partner, Kerry has come to the final stages of creating the site,

it is time to ask for your input and endorsement. Kerry is open for

revisions, additions, and just about any feedback she can get. This

project will not work unless she has your support.

Please drop by the beta site: HERE for the details.

We need at least 5 sites to get this started. Will you

be one of the founding sites? She would like to hear from you by the end

of the week, even if it's just to say you're not interested. If that is

the case, please tell her why.

Fran, I know you won't have a chance to join us until your current tour is

over. That's okay. I'll send you the text version URL in another post.

Pax & Amicitia,

Subject: WebRing Status

Members -

I have been experiencing the same difficulties you have with the Ring's navigation. For the past few days, just connecting to the ring's management has been a ritual of crossing my fingers & closing my eyes. So, I thought i would pass this note just received from them onto you... In case you haven't read the background on who run's WebRing let me first tell you he is this amazing kid of 17!! Don't let it scare ya tho... He is very much committed to this project (responds to mail QUICK). Plus, he is GREATLY appreciated out here with hundreds of rings! If you have the time, and it's up, I recommend reading about him on WebRing's home: Here

Here's the note recv'd tonight:

Subject: Webring Status

Hello K~,

As I'm sure you know, the server has yet again been acting up in a pretty major way over the past week or two. I am well aware of the problem and am doing my best to fix the situation, a combination of incredibly flaky hardware likes to lock up every couple days and a really <EDITED> ISP that doesn't seem to be capable of keeping active routes to our servers.

So.. I'm looking at a possible arrangement with Linkexchange and

possibly borrowing money from my employer to purchase a new system to temporarily replace the one that's acting up. I'm also pursuing a few advertising deals so that I might actually be able to generate some sort of cash flow (gosh!). Who knows.. someday I might even be able to pay back my parents.. would *that* be a trip.

In any case, Webring has been my personal hell for the past few weeks, so rest assured that I'm committed to doing whatever it takes to get it stable as soon as possible as my sanity is also at stake. There are a few things that you might be able to help me out with, however:

1) New home: Ideally I would like to move the system somewhere that already has fat bandwidth and servers already in place. I'm currently only using about half a T1 at most, but the system is growing pretty quickly (or at least it would be if it weren't crashing every few days). I would also like to be able to move it to an existing server instead of having to go out and buy new ones.. currently it's running on a pentium pro 200 running FreeBSD (unix).. anything less than similarly dedicated system is pretty worthless to me at this point.

2) Ads: I have buttloads of advertising space that can be sold and nobody who wants to buy it (or knows its available). If you are interested in advertising on the system, I am selling ads in quantities of 10,000 exposures and up starting at $200 (that's $.02/exposure). Ads can be targeting at specific rings or RingWorld categories, so there are serious targeting possibilities here, considering how specialized most of the Webrings are. (You know, advertising detergent on daytime TV webrings.. that sort of thing. =) Yeah, okay.

Anyhow, let me know if you can help me with either of these things, and I'll keep ya posted..

Oh, one other thing.. the ringmasters-l list *is* back up, but I lost

the old list file when I left school a few weeks ago (it was on my old desktop system which is 1,000 miles away and not connected to a network right now). So.. if you were on the list you will have to resubscribe. Sorry!

Cheers,

sage
