Following his father's death, Sander withdrew from the Brethren and
entered the monastic life of Ephrata, a community established by Conrad
Beissel. Beissel had separated from the Brethren after a rejection of his
contention that the Sabbath should be celebrated on the seventh day.
After ten years there, Sander won his way back to the Brethren, and
became one of the great evangelists of that church, a noted letter
writer, historian and devotional poet.
