!Immigration: 15 Dec 1681 from Bristol, England. One year before William Penn
!Biography: Robert Jefferis. Born 1656, possibly in Wiltshire, England. Died Apr 4, 1739 in East Bradford Township, Penn. Possibly son of John Jefferis. Came to Pennsylvania no later than 1685 and possibly as early as Dec. 15, 1681, perhaps on ship Bristol Factor. Earliest record is as witness in Chester Sept. 1685. Robert Jefferis married twice. The first was Jane Chandler. The second was Ann, maiden name unknown. Robert was active in public affairs. Served as constable in Westtown in 1703, succeeding his neighbor, Richard Buffington (see miscellaneous immigrant ancestors). Many of his descendants were Quakers, but according to Gilbert Cope, who did extensive Quaker genealogy work in late 1800s, it does not appear that Robert himself was a Quaker. In 1691, he bought 60 acres near middle of Upper Chichester twp, probably living there until 1701. In 1701, he bought 169 acres in what is now East Bradford and sold Chichester lands. In 1721, he added 189 acres to holdings by purchase. In 1733, Robert conveyed homestead to son Benjamin, reserving a lifetime interest.
Robert Jeffries was thecousin of Judge George Jeffries, Baron of Wem, Chief Justice underKing Charles II and Lord Chancellor of England under King James II.Sometimes refereed to as the "Hanging Judge", George died a prisonerin the Tower of London in 1689. Robert sailed from Bristol Harbor atage 25. After a 2 month voyage he reached the colonies on December15, 1681 at Rober Wade's landing where he settled in an area calledthe Uplands, the 1st. settlement in the province of Pennsylvania. Thesettlement is now known as "Old Chester" as named by William Penn.Robert bought land from William Penn and others which totalled about600 acres in and near the new settlement of Chichester, However by1702 he had purchase or exchanged his property for about 1,000 acresnear the township of Bradford (now Birmingham) near the town of WestChester. Robert moved his family to his holdings in Bradford and in1703 he was appointed constable of Westtown, Bradford. Roberts firstwife Jane (Chandler) Jeffries died in East Bradford in 1726. Threeyears later in 1729 he married Anne Archer, she was the mother ofRichard Jeffries of our line. No portrait of Robert exists, howeveraccounts passed down generation to generation speak of him as a tallman, about 6 feet, of fine physique and of dignified bearing. He issaid to have been of good manners, cordial and hospitable, a man ofenergy, industry and business capacity, whose judgement was consultedin private and public affairs.
